Stress from poor water quality causes fin rot. There is no need to medicate. You are headed down the right road. The salt solution is 1 tablespoon per gallon and heat the tank to 83 degrees. Make sure you have plenty of water circulation so oxygen can remain high. Usually when water is corrected, via water changes, then fin rot will go away on its own. The pet store gave you excellent advice, I would use them for info as good advice is very hard to find. Most fish fixes can be done with little cost and no meds, which doesn't make the pet store much money. I would shop there exclusively for the pay back for good advice. Petco or Petsmart wouldn't have told you that. They would have sold you a half a dozen things you didn't need that would likely end in the fish's demise.

3 teaspoons isn't gonna help at all. Use the same salt, and add 3.5 cups. This will help boost the fishes' immune systems and prevent the fin rot from becoming infected. The salt and heat will also kill Ick/Ich, so either way, salt and heat will solve your problem. For the temperature, bump it up to between 83-85 degrees. Fungal medication won't help considering Ick is a parasite and fin rot is from poor water quality. To prevent future fin rot incidents, do weekly water changes while vacuuming your gravel. Each time, remove 15-20% of the tank's capacity into a bucket. Email me if you have any questions.

You need antibiotic for Ick, do a partial 20 percent water change weekly no matter healthy or sick! Always!
