The biowheel is from the freshwater and has been running for about 6 months. I never changed it per the manufacturers directions. I am using a new carbon filter but I was just wondering if the freshwater biowheel would cause any harm?

Yes, you can use this filter in your saltwater, but you'll need for new bacteria to build up to get biological filtration - the bacteria from the freshwater most likely won't survive the change in salinity/osmotic pressure. It will eventually colonize with new bacteria adapted to a saltwater environment, though, so you will get the biological filtration in time.

You can use the same filter. You will have to let it cycle through on the salwater tank since there are different bacteria involved.
