I've had a Betta fish for a week. He just started building a bubble nest. I don't know much about this, I don't own a female but is it usual for males to build one anyways? What should I do when I clean it and the nest breaks? Is that bad or will he just build a new one?

Male bettas will build nests whether a female is present or not. Just go ahead an clean the container your betta is in (hopefully at least a gallon, but 2.5 or larger of a tank is better) as necessary. If the nest is destroyed, he'll build another if he's in the mood to do so.

Having your betta build a bubble nest just shows that you're doing a reasonable job of keeping him healthy and happy. Here's a good link to learn about them and their care and behavior: http://www.bettatalk.com/

some males make bubble next all the time, like daily,he may just kill the females so unless you get a good betta book on breeding then don't bother, i think breeding bettas need a 10 gallon and you have to remove the females after they have layed there eggs in his bubble nest and the babies (fry) are really hard to keep alive you have to give them an area to keep from being sucked into the filter. The coolest fish to breed are fancy guppies they are called live bearers they come in colors almost as attractive as bettas and the young are born alive and swimming no messy eggs the parents ususally don't eat them so you can have a tank full in no time, same goes for mollies and platties

Yes, it's very common for males to build bubble nests. Not only do they build one because they are happy, but they also build one to mark their territory. When you first buy bettas, they most likely build one because they are in a larger bowl or tank with better water conditions and food, compared to the small plastic 2 cup container they are sold in at the pet store. So, it's extremely common for them to build a huge one the first week you have it. It's ok if the nest breaks, he will rebuild.

Bettas build nests when they are happy... Regardless of whether they have a mate or not. Don't worry about the nest when you clean the tank... If he is still happy, he will build another one.

It is normal for a male betta to build a bubblenest even if there is no female in sight. They build bubblenest as a signal for females (and us owners) to know that they are ready to breed and take on the role of fatherhood. Don't worry if you break the bubblenest when u clean the tanl, they will just rebuild one, and don't be concerned if sometime in the future he stops building one, this may just mean that conditions are not ideal to breeding.

Actually, males are usually the ones that build a bubble nest. And congradualtions, they make them when they are enjoying themselves.
But don't worry about ruining them, it won't be a bother.
I am pretty sure he will make a new one.
