Do you mean as in "It's relaxing to watch fish swim."? Possibly, but I think a lot would be dependent upon the personality of the viewer. I like watching the fish in my tank, but I think after a few minutes of seeing the same repetitive screens, I'd get bored. My fish at least vary their behavior, which I think would make them more interesting, plus they inteact with each other which onscreen fish don't (or if they would, you'd know the outcome after seeing it a few times).
This might make an interesting study, though, if you could quantify the changes using an EKG/EEG, and possibly use a questionaire to determine how likely the subjects would be to enjoy/become bored with repetitive scenes, or having each see live fish versus a screensaver with half seeing each type first and switching the second half as something of a control.
Might make an interesting thesis if you can find an advisor who would go along with the idea.

no, there is a difference between real & fake. watching a real fish tank can be soothing and interesting watching something that's actually happening and the little things the fish do. a screensaver is animated and is kinda on a loop so its the same thing over and over your brain knows its unreal therefore it won't read into it as if it was real.

i think not. a real fish tank you have more of an attachment to in that its your own creation that involves time and effort on your part. many people grow an endearing fondness for their fish. i doubt you could do the same for a screen saver. any and all physical and emotional attachment to a virtual tank is lost.

It is absolutely the same......... in the same way that eating a picture of a fish sandwich is as tasty and nutritious as eating a real fish sandwich.
