Yes they are. Have had same problems here.
I have even bought expensive ones (Whisper) and
they do the same thing. One brand I do like to use with
a lower noise level is Top Fin. I still put a pad down under
it, but it does ok. I have discovered that the chep brands
quieter than the more expensive. Crazy isn't it? LOL
Hope this helped you. " TOP FIN "

Its the fish.night-time is when they put their plans into action. They have all sorts of equipment...drills,computer drives, vehicles, you name it.Its all part of their plan for world domination.Theyre not bothered about the amount of noise they make cos they know no-one will believe you,the sound of their evil machinations sound exactly like the airator,(coincidence?I dont think so.)also they like you to be sleep deprived cos then you more suggestible to their mind control.just take a closer look at the little castle and stuff in the tank next time...youll see what i mean.Seriously, ask an expert but im not sure it would do them any harm to have it switched off between say 12 and 6am.the water should retain most of its oxygen concentration. But i may be horribly wrong and they may all die overnight so like i say, check first.if you rephrase your question...can you turn fish tank pumps off overnight?Im sure my mate did it with hers, you just gotta set the alarm to remind you to put it back on.

Do away with the air pump and go for a decent size Ehiem external filter. You'll get filtration and water movement silently.

check on the pump motor as most have got a small switch that turns down the speed of the motor thus reducing the noise.

This has happened to me - Just clean it out! or, if its not a well known make, buy one! My Fluval was expensive, but its quiet and good at what it does.
