As said in previous questions I am purchasing a male crown tailed beta. I recently learned due to yahoo answers that Betas need a heater. I will be keeping the Beta in a 3.5 gallon rectangular all glass tank with a small live plant, a filter and possibly an African Dwarf Frog. The heater I am looking at is a 7.5 watt heater. It says for up to 2 gallons but I would rather get a heater that may keep the water a little cooler than acidently fry my fish.
Is 7.5 watts a good amount of watts for a 3.5 gallon tank or what is a good micro heater for my tank?
Thanks in Advance

Hi as a new fish owner any help would be gratefully received. I have a 60 litre orb. Been up and running for a while,so got two fish last sunday was advised by the fish store that two would be fine. One goldfish one black moor. Overnight on monday the goldfish died, thought it would as floating at top of tank. Black moor fine, very active!
Went and got another black moor on thurs, again fish store said it was ok.It was lively in tank at shop, did as i should to aclimatise it,but a few hours later it sunk to the botom and has basically been there ever since, keeps burying itself under the rock or plants.
The first fish is still doing great,so after reading the answers to other questions i assume it cant be a water problem,as he would be sick too?
Sorry to ramble on but i thought id let you know it all. Just want to know if i can do anything or if its going to die, feel sad that if it is then its taking so long, poor little thing.
Cheers if anyone can help. Em

I am using a "Clear Water" formula to help clear the cloudiness of my tank, and the directions say "remove carbon from filter during use". I can't just take the carbon out of the filter, but my filter is a hang one filter with 2 sort of sponges. One is white with carbon, the other is more rough and is black.

So my question is can I just remove the one sponge-like thing with the carbon from the filter? I hope I made sense....

I guess if you have an external hang on filter you would know what I'm taking about =)

I have a 35 gallon tank with a 3 1/2" Redtailed Shark, a brisle nose pleco and two blue Gouramis (one male one female).
The male Gourami is around 3 1/2" long and the female is slitly smaller.
Have have yet to find another type of fish to add to my community tank because every time I put a new fish in the male gourami harasses the new fish until it is seriously injured or dead. Does anyone have any suggestion on what type of fish will be compatible with my aggressive gourami?
(The Redtailed Shark is peaceful until something piss' it off)

Well my Beta Timon is about to reach its 2 years with me and i noticied hes been sitting upright for a couple days. I thought it was normal at first because he still comes for food and such. But then after that he started to lay down at the bottom of the tank. He comes up for air, comes up for food and thats it then slowly goes right back down to the bottom. I cleaned his tank and everything but he's still doing it. Can anyone tell me why or if i should start looking for a new fish =*(

My tank is freshwater with 12 small community tropical fish.
I have a power filter and an under gravel filter. My tank is 3 months old. My ammonia level is 8 with an API liquid tester.
I add ammo lock every other day, I change 25% of the water when I vacuum every week and I have ammo chips in my filter, and I add water conditioner and aquarium salt to the water.
The pH is 6.6, hard water, no nitrates of nitrites. I've recently been trying to raise my pH, but the water is not responsive to this treatment. My fish look okay, but I feel I've been adding too much ammonia remover. Someone please help me.

I have this little fish, and i have no idea what it is

sorry, but I don't have any pictures

Ok, so its about 1 inch long, from nose to tail, its flat, its mouth is kinda facing upwords where it looks like hes frowning all the time, he is silver, a dorsal fin covering most of his back, its kind of ovalish shaped...more round at the face then pointed near the tail

Also, can this fish live in a 3 gallon tank with a betta fish, or with my goldfish in the 20 gallon tank

He used to live in a 10 gallon tank with guppies, but if you read my guppie question you know they all died, and my parents won't let me keep that tank out for 1 fish, so he either lives with the betta or goldfish

he is in with the betta right now, and they get along fine, the betta wasn't to happy about it in the beginning, but now its fine

SO, what kind of fish do you think it is?

I'm trying to help someone out, but I'm not sure if these fish would get along. I know one would need to use caution with these fish, but give me some advice.

The fish:
Blue gourami (up to 6 inches)
Dwarf gourami (up to 2-3 inches)
pictus catfish (up to 10 inches)
6 tiger barbs (up to 3 inches each)

Wondering if you could use small amounts of normal fertilizer for aquatic plants instead of those overpriced little bottles you can buy at pet stores. Why or why not?
