I'd go with a white background and black gravel.

Red gravel or light-coloured gravel will distract from your fish and make its colours appear washed-out. Black gravel looks great with almost any brightly-coloured fish, and the white background will be a nice stark contrast to his red and black colours.

Red gravel and black background and red and black fish = camouflage.

You want to choose another color that make the red and black stand out. I would choose a natural (brown or gray stone) and a plant background with some silk aquarium plants in the tank (you can use suction cups rather than the plasic bottoms to help anchor them so the oscar doesn't "redecorate" as much. This looks more like a "natural" setting, so they'll be more relaxed, and a relaxed fish will give you its best colors.

Some photos of what this color combo will look like:

if you want to go all out, I would get black or white sand with a black background. For decor I'd go look for some nice big flat river rocks. The fish would love them stacked into caves. Stick with plastic plants, Oscars are extremely destructive and would tear live ones to shreds. Give the fish a chance to showcase but still live in a natural environment.

Red and black colors would cause him to blend in and be camouflaged in the tank. Perhaps a blue gravel with green plants, yellow and purple decorations would really make him stand out in his tank.

I would go with light tan rocks and a light background, and maybe green plants to bring out the red, since red and green are opposites.

I would agree with your husband. Usually black brings out colors for your fish!
