I was reading about setting up aquaria, and in the book it stated that aged tapwater or bottled water could be used, but not distilled water. So the question is this: what is it about distilled water that is so different from normal water that it can't be used in an aquarium?

Just today when i walked to my tank and i looked at my betta. He looked back and his gills opened up all the way and became paralell to his face. Is this normal? Is it normal to have a black flap under his gills?

I had 4 neon tetras, 2 white skirt tetras, and 1 young swordtail (only 2 inches long right now) in a 10 gallon (the other young swordtail is in another tank as she is pregnant). Today I noticed that I only saw 3 neon tetras, which was normal because often they hide really well in plants and I can't find them. But then I removed all the plants and fake coral from my tank and combed through the gravel and still didn't find the 4th neon. Is it possible that she died behind a plant where I couldn't see her, and the other fishes ate her corpse?

I just tested water levels, they are fine, I realize that any living thing can sometimes die without much of an explanation. I just want to know if it is possible that the other fish ate her corpse?

I have a new filter, a skimmer, special dissolving pills, the stuff called clear away. I don't know what else to do. The tank is 25 litres so it's a bit of a pain to have to clean twice a week. I also bought one of those fish that clean the tank (I can't remember what it's called) and nothing. I've only got 3 fish in there and they're not big. Help?

My tank is still going through its cycle, and only yesterday i did a %25 water change because my ammonia levels were too high, when i woke up in the morning i noticed my tank's water was really cloudy, i tried to use a product that clears cloudy water from tanks but it has not worked, does anyone know how to solve this and how i can prevent this in the future? Also i have 3 red Dwarf gauramis in the tank its about 38 litres.

Cosmo (the second) keeps hanging out in the top corner of the tank, like hes looking out of the window lol. his reactions are fine (if i put my fingers near the part of the glass where he is, he'll move away) and hes coming out for food. the reason i say that is the original cosmo became very lethargic and was near the bottom of the tank, and ignored food/fingers...
could my fish be relaxing? why would he be so dis-interested?
(i treat the tank regularly with tetramedica goldmed, have done a water change 2 days ago, checked water levels and they were fine, added a few live bacteria in my new water with tetraaqua safestart and also used dechlorinator) i can't think of anything that would be causing this...i did move their tank around a bit when i changed the water (ie different layout) but could this be an effect of that?

When i first started my tank i got an anomie think they look cool but now i realize that its pretty big and i cant put things around it because i guess it zaps other corals and doesnt let them fully open. Is there any way to make the anomie move from the hole it is in with out killing it?

I enjoy australian rainbows. But I have had a bigger austalian rainbow beat up a different type of rainbow fish species. Are australian rainbow fish "territorial"? I have a banjo catfish in there with the 1 that I have started with. They seem to get along fine. I have alot of room and adequate filtration and cover. Anyone with experience in these fish?

I just got some catfish and have been feeding them sinking pelletts. But the pellets have made a mess and now the walls of my tank are coated with residue. I have cut back to the ammount of pellets im feeding the cat's since they make a mess - but is there a safe way to get rid of the residue on the walls? Or will it just dissapear over time? What about wiping with a cloth or sponge?

I have a 20 gallon freshwater aquarium stocked with two 6" plecostomus and 2 dwarf honey gouramis. I don't actually use an air pump, I have a Biowheel powerhead filter that keeps great water movement and air circulation. However, last night I lost power and they aren't expecting to turn it back on for 2 days. Will my plecos be alright without the air circulation, or will they suffocate? The gouramis, of course are labyrinth fish any how so I'm not as concerned with them.

Also, without the filtration are the ammonia levels going to increase?

I had a 29 gallon tank with beautiful koi fish, and different types of goldfish. Most of the fish, I'd had for years. They were all huge fish so I decided to start feeding them pellets, instead of flakes. I went to the local pet store and bought a bag of koi pellets. Within days, my tank turned cloudy, my orange and white fish developed big black dots, and my black fish developed white dots, and pretty soon, they died. I didnt even think of the food I bought. I thought it was ick but my mother said it didnt look anything like ick. Thats when I noticed that the food I bought was expired. Would that have had such a dramatic effect on my tank? Or do you think it was something else. 2 of my fish managed to survive it and I got them out and into a new tank right away, but im still puzzled as to what caused this. Im still upset by it because I'd had them for so long.

I have a new aquarium 55 gal. and treated it the way I was told to by the pet store. At first my fish did fine and 2 weeks later I bought more fish. Now a week later nearly all of them are dead.
Why?
