Can you tell whether you have a male or a female goldfish? I couldn't and had no idea how to tell which was which. It is a difficult task at best but there are a few ways to help determine the sex of your fish. It is a most difficult task on fry less than a year old, but as a general rule, females are likely to be bigger than the males of the same age. When they reach spawning age, and the eggs begin to mature in the female fish, she will thicken in the ventral area. At the same time, the male will start to develop small white tubercles on his gill plates and on the leading rays of his fins, particularly on the first ray of the pectoral fin which can usually be detected on fish with head growth.

Then there is the anal opening. With practice, so I'm told you can distinguish the difference between the sexes. Below are pictures of the anal opening of the male and female goldfish. These differences become much more apparent as spawning time approaches.

A & B are the female anal openings. They are larger, protrude slightly and is round in shape. The anal fin is thicker and has a heavier first anal fin spine.

The male is C & D. The male's opening is small and oval with no noticeable anal fin thickness.

These differences become more apparent as spawning time approaches. The female opening will be larger and more distended when the eggs are ripe. When the male is ready, milt may be pushed out of the ventral opening by running a finger lightly along the sides of the fish, which shouldn't be necessary as the tubercles will be plainly viewed

First, it is virtually impossible to sex goldfish. It is, literally, impossible with juveniles and extremely difficult with breeding age adults. You can only sex them when they are in breeding season, which doesn't usually occur until they are about 3 years of age. Males, during this time, will get tubercles (kind of like white pimples) on their gills and fins and the female will get larger around in the belly and her vent will become convex, but being able to see these changes in the female is still difficult. Another way to tell whether you have a male is that the males will chase the female when they are ready to breed. The problem is that, in the absence of a female, males will chase other males. So, you still may not know whether you have a female. Bottom line is, unless you have an extremely large aquarium where you can keep quite a few goldfish so that the odds leave you with at least one male and one female, or you become an expert at being able to differentiate sexes, you just have to leave it to fate as to whether your goldies breed.

Depending on the size of the fish, you may not be able to tell yet. Its very hard, sometimes impossible to tell on very small/young goldfish. Once they get a little larger, however, its not impossble at all to sex them.

On bigger, mature goldfish, Males will get white dots(breeding tubricles) on the outsides of their gills when they are in the breeding sort of mood. They will be much more noticable if you also have females in your tank. Females will get a little fatter(full of eggs), although this is sometimes hard to notice.

Another way to tell, which I personally use and like better than waiting to see the white dots, is to look at the first ray(lines on their fins) of their pectoral fins(the little flippers on their sides). On males, the first ray will be noticably thicker than all the other rays. On females, there will be no difference in thickness.

Hope this helps you!

if ur goldfishes r less than 1 year then its very difficult to find out (goldfishes get matured in just a year) but if they r 1year or more then there is a simple way: its that the females are usually fatter than the males of there own age as they start producing eggs inside!! males usually have more bumps on there head and get white pimples on there head during spawning.hope i helped u
