Just today when i walked to my tank and i looked at my betta. He looked back and his gills opened up all the way and became paralell to his face. Is this normal? Is it normal to have a black flap under his gills?

That's called "flaring" it's totally normal for a Betta. Both males and females will do it to try to defend territory and males will do it trying to attract a female.

Its completely normal. WHen bettas are spawning the 'flare ' at each other to get the other impressed. The male wll flare at the female to get her interested and then these 'flaps' come from under his gills. If you have a mirror near by then he might be fighting with him self thinking it's another male betta. Its kinda cute until they start hitting their head on the wall of the tank lol.

This is normal if it is a Betta Spleden. It is a display of aggression, aggitation, or used as a mating ritual. Most likely it was responding to your presence with aggression

Oh yeah this is definitly normal. See, bettas (males mostly...) have egos the size of a 20 gallon tank and love to try to impress you/ scare you by showing off just how big he is. It's one of those macho things, he's just trying to tell you that the tank is his territory, and to back off. They do that with other fish, and to mirrors also... :0)
