Besides bettas, what are some other fish that will be fine in a 5 gallon tank? I really like mollies and was thinking of getting a couple of those. Will a 5 gallon be big enough?

Mollies get too big for a 5 gallon. Not inches-wise, but they poop a lot for fish their size. One might be alright, if it wasn't one of the ones that get real big, like the sailfins and dalmations do, but it would get lonely. They're very social fish.

Better candidates besides a betta:
-- 2 or 3 fancy guppies
-- 3 or 4 sparkling gouramis aka pygmy gouramis
-- 1 or 2 dwarf puffers

Non-fish options are shrimp, apple snails, and dwarf frogs.

Avoid all the small schooling fish, like neons and rasboras. They're not too big a bioload for a 5 gallon, but really need to kept in larger schools than what a 5 gallon can sustain and they need more swimming room than that.

mollies are too large for tanks of your size. i wouldnt even recommend them for a 10 gallon. I went to mexico a few years ago and saw wild mollies that were well over 5 inches long. My largest sailfin molly was about 4.5inches.

While sailfins tend to be larger, most mollies will not do well in a 5 gallon.

Besides a betta.....

Try looking into white cloud minnows, very tolerant when it comes to water temp and parameters, they will stay small.

You cant stock many different species, but you can stock one species and about 4 of that species.

Also look into a smaller species of danios. like a zebra.

Inverts are cool to, i love using golden freshwater clams, they help with filteration and it is good for smaller tanks, Also ghost shrimps are cool for a smaller tank, they do a good job at algae eatting, cherry shrimps are another option.

If you don't want a betta, I would put a school of 5 neons in there and 2-4 ghost shrimps

If you would try a dwarf puffer, they need perfect conditions
and a constant supply of snails for their teeth

hope that helps
Good luck

Hmm, mollies tend to breed fast sometimes. A betta would be a good choice, Goldfish put out a lot of ammonia and foul a small tank pretty fast. Some fancy guppies would look nice, too.
