If you're seeing heaters for $60, you need to find a different fish store! I like visitherm submersibles ($16+ tax: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/prod/198231/product.web ) but I've also used Aquaclear ($12: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/prod/215227/product.web ) in smaller tanks. When you're breeding the bettas, you should lower your water level so it's only about 3 inches deep, so you don't need a full sized heater. I breed in a 10 gallon tank, so I figure I'm only heating about 3 gallons of water (you want 5 watts per gallon of water, more if you need to raise the temperature more than 10 degrees above room temperature). Since the heater will need to be turned on its side because of the low water level, you need one that's submersible.

I think you have the wrong idea of what a sponge filter is - there are filters that use a sponge inside as the media, but what you want is to have it on the outside of the filter so the fry don't get sucked in - they'd go through the intake and the impeller before they would reach a sponge inside your filter if you're using a traditional hang-on. And with needing to lower the water level to just a few inches deep, a hang-on probably wouldn't work, at least not very well, and you'd put a lot of strain on the motor to pull the water that high out of the tank. The sponge filter (the type I gave you the link for previously) sits inside on the bottom of the tank, and pulls the water through very slowly, almost like an undergravel filter (you can't use an undergravel filter either, because you need to have a bare bottom so the male can see the eggs when their laid, and the eggs and fry if they fall out of the bubblenest).

I can't generalize on your answer, so you'd do yourself a favor by checking out this site and searching for yourself. There is more information on there than you could probably get off here.

Hi I agree with Kyle (www.drsfostersmith.com), to go to for your heaters, I have (1) 1 gal (1) 2 gal 1 (12) gal 1 (30) gal tanks, mini heaters 7.5 watt for your small tanks 9.99, heck they have 50 watt-300watt heaters from$14.39-17.99. Also if you are going to breed them why don't you go to (www.justbettashome.insightbb.com?links.html) excellent sight for betta lovers like us. Good Luck on your up coming babies P.S I also have betta's along with my cory cats they get along really good they play together alot.
