What do you all think about "departmenting" the fish section into catagories like many other topics in Yahoo answers has done? Each of us all have relative experience with different aspects of this hobby which makes our information important to those asking questions. In an example for me, I don't have any knowledge to share on Salt Water enviroment, but I keep Arowana's and Gourami's and have a good background in Chemistry. I wouldn't even try to answer something in Salt water myself. I just thought maybe if we had our "resident experts" in certain areas, maybe we could facilitate answers better and more effeciently? Anyone think this is worth our time to petition yahoo about? Objections?

I have a coralife deep six hydrometer but i have no idea how to use it. Whenever i try to take a reading it gives me a different reading... Should i dip it into the water or take a sample from the top? why the hell does it give me a different reading everytime? Would it be a better idea if i used one of those floating glass hydrometers?

I have many fry in my tank and lately my three older fry are hanging around each other, a lot like they are grouping up like the three older guppies. I thought they started this when they are full grown are they really grouping up or is it just my mind playing tricks on me.

I have a 20 gallon tank for my 3 goldfish and a tiny cleaner fish (which I just got about a week or two ago). I've had the goldfish for almost 2 years and they're very healthy. I've tried everything - water changes (full, half, a third water change), gravel cleaning, the anti-cloudy stuff they sell at pet stores, leaving the light off for a while, getting a whole new filter, changing the filter insert more often, cleaning the insert more often. It's not in direct sunlight either. When I first do a full water change the water is crystal clear for a couple days then goes cloudy. I've even waited and not done anything to see if it'd clear up on it's own. I have a salt water tank as well and that water is crystal clear so I really don't think it's the water itself. Is there something else I'm missing?? I can't figure it out.

I have a bottom sucker tank cleaner, brown, flat with wide mouth it sticks to the surface with. No idea what it’s called. Recently I noticed that it’s loosing it’s top skin in patches. I am treating the entire fish tank for a fungus because of it but is it correct? I also have another cleaner, angel fish, orange platy( not sure what it’s called either) and a gurami (flat local fish, gray with white spots.) All of them are over three years old. Should I treat entire tank or just sick fish?

A lady at the pet shop said my ammonia problem was coming from leaving algae wafers in the tank for my corys to eat. That over time it disintigrates and decays. Well I'm sure it does but that kind of leads me to another problem..She said to feed them fresh veggies like zuccini. I put some in the water last night and woke up this morning to see they didn't touch it. So I'm a little unsure as to what to do then. I put a small bowl with some gravel in it and buried it in the gravel in the tank and set a algae wafer in it so that the bowl will keep it from falling in the gravel when it falls apart. All the fish automatically started hitting it and eventually managed to get it out of the bowl. I don't know what to do. I only feed them one algae wafer a day. My two corys can't eat all of that I know but my guppies seem to enjoy them too. What would you guys suggest I do?

I went back and read alot of YA re: cycling a new tank, but I'd still like specific, clear (explain it to me like I'm two years old! LOL ) on what to do. I set up my new 10gal freshwater tank 7 days ago.. filter gravel etc. I treated the water and 1 day later added 1 zebra danio. I tested the water and everythng looks good. 5 days later I tested the water and added a 2nd zebra danio, its been 4 days and all looks well. Question, today is day #8, do I change my water now, and if i do and only change 10-20% of the water is it ok to "roughly" measure the water dechlorinater, because the first treatment was for a 10 gal tank, and i dont have a measure to only measure out for say, 1 gal. ( hope that made sense)......... and when I test the water, the results are all good, which kinda worries me, shouldnt it be a little off and work towards being good??

I was putting new gravel in my tank and a piece must have gotten lodged in the filter because the filter is groaning and no longer recycling water. Anything I can do to fix it or just buy a new filter?

Were moving from Wisconsin to Tennessee, which is about 800 miles. We have a 55 gallon tank with 12 tropical fish and a algae eater. It will be at least 48 hours before we'll be able to refill the tank Were only going to travel 3/4 of the way down there the first day

My male guppy for the past day has been wiggling exessively (swishing his tail and whole body back and forth frantically). It doesn't look normal and he is also swimming around the tank really fast. He has never acted this way before, which makes me think something is wrong. What could it be? Is he sick?
