Fish - May 2007

I have a couple of fish tanks and today a couple of fish died. They had no tail or fins left, as if they had been picked at. I checked the water and everything was normal. I know they didn't have any diseases because the water had been treated just incase...and no new fish have been introduced. Both of the fish were guppies. Is it possible that the betta fish killed them?

I've got a 2-year old 30-galon aquarium that I have just planted with Limnophila aquatica. I'd like to know, Can I put in Methelyn Blue to an aquarium that has these kinds of plants? And how much should I put in, if any? It's indoors, so that I use a solar lamp for artificial sunlight. And one last question... My water turns reddish after a few weeks. What can I do to remedy this? Thanks.

I have two systems for aeration and my hubby is getting nervous, so I have to ask - is there such a thing? I have very good filtration and since adding the second aerator my water tests perfect every time on all counts.
Can there be too much aeration, ever? Is there a dangerous size of bubbles (I have mostly tiny airbubbles but some larger. I know I have more than I actually need as basic but the effect on the water is simply brilliant.

I have one little male beta fish in a glass bowl. There's colourful rocks in there and a red and green plant in the middle. I feed him a little very night, and wash the bowl and it's contents each week. Why in the world does it often smell like skunk or sewer?!

I have a freshwater community tank that's in good working condition. I currently have ~20 of the usual species (Danios, small tetras, platys, 1 cory cat, 1 clown loach).

Is anyone aware of a formula to be used to determine how many (average 1" or something to that extent) fish my tank can accommodate? Size is the current "standard" 55 gallon.

My 28 gallon tank is still in the early cycle stages with 4 zebra danios, 3 mickeys, 3 catfish and 1 fish that the clerk at Petsmart (Yeah, I know!) told me would eat the black ramshorn snails that infested my tank. I removed the plants that had snail egg sacks today and bought new plants.

I was told that plants would help speed up the tank's cycle and cut down the ammonia and nitrite levels. I did a 25% water change yesterday too. Do I do a daily 1-2 gallon water change for the next 3 weeks? Also my carbon filter gets gross about every 3-4 days. Do I change that often too? Here is what the Petsmart clerk told me to do: add 3 capfuls of Cycle every day for 3 weeks and do a weekly water change of only 10%. I dosed the tank with Prime instead. I have to be patient I know while the tank finishes cycling for what, the next 3-4 weeks? My ammonia detector is at "alert" and the NH3 detector is light green "stress." Daily 1-2 gallon water changes? Prime once a week? What should I do?

I have been looking into geting a shovelnose cat fish for about a year now, lots of reading on them.
anyway I would like to know from those of you who keep them what do you think of them?
and has anyone tryed to breed them from what Ive seen its says no one has yet to do this.

I have 4 guppies, 2 platies, 3 black skirt tetras, 2 algae eaters, 1 red tetra, and 5 red eye tetras. Do you think angel fish would do well? I had a tank full of guppies and the other groups had plenty of pals too until a batch of platies from Petsmart contaminated my tank. 22 Fish died in a week. Now my tank looks really bare.

I have two questions. First, my betta fish had a small tear and a hole in his tail. I treated him with Bettafix and after 4 days, His tail started to shred. I did a water change and now im waiting to see what happens. Why did this happen? Second, I was advised to treat him with Melafix. Im getting the medicine tomorrow (friday) but i am going on vacation from sunday to the following saturday. How do I treat him? Please help!!

i have this pond fish that is like about 3 years old and suddenly its become fat and its scales are lifting up. Its eyes suddenly have white pupils and bulging out. other pond fish i have seem to encourage it to eat the fish food given and seem to try to cheer it up. im not sure if its pregnant or not.

Right now i have 10 gallon tank with small african cichlids, 1electric yellow,1 kenyi,1 auratus,and a small pleco.I plan to get a much larger 56 gallon or larger aquarium. i cant decide whether to stay with semi-hard to take care of African cichlids or go with normal comunity fresh water fish. I know alot of people post annoying "My bettas dying" questions, sorry I guess I'm one of them >; )
He was so happy and all like a noraml swimming betta would eat like a pig and sish before my hand. I had him in a glass floating in a rather torrental 6g (rapid water is bad for betta, I know) so the rush wouldnt ruin him. He seemed fine in there for day on end. I would wave my hand in front of it several times and he would cutely swish before it. But today he was lying at the bottom, I thought he was weak from hunger I tried feeding, but no good he ate only one pellet. My bro said I could have starved him. He's not slimy, blurry eyes or parasite leeched he's just seems like very tired fish. when he gets air he sinks down and. I took him out of the glass and plugged up the current but do immediate recoverery. I tried even putting puttingh food up to his mouth but no.

are they fun?

i have cichlids, they are pretty and fun to watch a few are real bullies.
also danio's, the hot pink, green, and orange, also regular white/pink they are fun too 2 of them are pregnant
and also platies, one was pregnant and had babies. i name her the mother! ha.
