I have two questions. First, my betta fish had a small tear and a hole in his tail. I treated him with Bettafix and after 4 days, His tail started to shred. I did a water change and now im waiting to see what happens. Why did this happen? Second, I was advised to treat him with Melafix. Im getting the medicine tomorrow (friday) but i am going on vacation from sunday to the following saturday. How do I treat him? Please help!!

The first problem is that Bettafix and Melafix are not reasonable medications to treat a disease. That's why it continued to get worse even during the 4 day treatment. You are in a tough spot since there isn't a good treatment that will last for the days you will be gone. You will need to find a responsible person to administer proper care for your betta while you are gone. Your fish needs a 7-10 day treatment with an antibiotic. Maracyn or Maracyn 2 would be good choices, just have them treat as directed on the package. If no one else a vets office might perform this sitting service for you for a small fee.

melafix is a broad spectrum antibiotic. look for something with erythromyacin. it is a good antibiotic for fungal infections. make sure you are only giving the right amount. too much can cause problems, like i suspect happened last time. do not medicate if you are not going to be there to watch for negative affects. just keep up with water changes, maybe even using spring water. good luck
