I was putting new gravel in my tank and a piece must have gotten lodged in the filter because the filter is groaning and no longer recycling water. Anything I can do to fix it or just buy a new filter?

It must be an external filter... You don't specify. Unplug and empty the filter. Then you take the water intake tube off, underneath it will be a round plastic impeller rod, this comes out. Carefully it is a plastic piece attached to a ceramic rod about 1 inch long (breakable)

The problem is probably under or around this impeller. If you still can't find it, take it to your pet store and ask for help. AS long as the motor is running, the filter can be repaired.

Unplug it. Get out the instruction booklet that came with the filter. (You did save it,didn't you?) What is probably wrong is that a piece of the gravel is lodged against the impeller. Don't put gravel in a tank with the filter running. If you don't have and instruction package that came with the filter then we'll need to know what kind of filter you have, including brand and model number.
