I have a coralife deep six hydrometer but i have no idea how to use it. Whenever i try to take a reading it gives me a different reading... Should i dip it into the water or take a sample from the top? why the hell does it give me a different reading everytime? Would it be a better idea if i used one of those floating glass hydrometers?

I'm not a major fan of hydrometers made like this one. One thing to watch very carefully is any bubbles collecting on the moving arm that points to the reading. A bubble or two, even small one's, will throw off the readings. In my experience the floating glass models are generally more reliable and accurate.

Just take a sample from the top it is all the same.
You are getting different readings because you are not cleaning it between readings with fresh water. The readings should not be that far off. Get a second hydrometer. You should have two anyway. Get the floating glass.

Keep the hydometer in the tank constantly Keep it in the middle of the water, at the side of the tank
