Fish - May 2007

someone told be that even though males will fight, females are actually very tolerant and rather... loving? They get along with other fish and those of their own kind. If I go buy three female betta fish for a 10 gallon tank will they get along great on their first meeting (with the exception of creating a pecking order and determining who's boss)? And will that relationship carry on into their death? I'd like to have betta, but i feel they get lonely by their selves and i dont like to see a fish alone without interactions with other fish. I know a way to get more than one male together without fighting, but it actually takes me breeding a pair and getting rid of the parents, then getting rid of the females and keeping some of the males. That's alot of getting rid of fish! Is 3 females a right number? Or is it possible to get more? (The more, the merrier! I love to have them all different colors! Females can be colorful too! They just dont have as much fin)

I have never had one before, was given these by a friend who did not like them and was afraid they would eat her other fish. I tried to research them but found conflicting advice. Anyone with first hand advice? It seems to constantly be starving. I can't imagine anything else that would survive in its tank. I have to clean the gravel twice as often as my goldfish, and they always seem to be starving also. I can't keep a live plant in the tank because it eats it.

I have two 10 gallon tanks, at the moment one holds minnows from a pond in a pasture behind my house, the other 3 adult guppies and 9 of their babies (I'm planning on getting 1 more male because im not expecting them all to survive, especially the newest) Later on I'm going to throw those minnows back to the pond (probally tomorrow, I cant keep a tank empty for long at all! lol and the minnows arent pretty and attractive at all) and get a male and female betta, breed them, get rid of the male after he mates, get rid of the female after the eggs hatch, and get rid of the female fry so i can have more than one male in a tank together, a nice trick I learned from MM *beams* (I'm so happy for that trick! THANKS!) and I read that Otocinclus go nice with about all fishes and are very friendly and out of the way. At the moment I have one and she use to have another until that one died and I'm getting more. So, how many for the betta, how many for the 12+ guppies? I need them to clean up good!

I have a 10 Gallon Fish Tank right now , with 3 baby chiclids (2 Convict , 1 Red Devil)

Don't worry i know they need more space , but right now they are still young and have alot of room to swim.

My filter system right now is old , and i have a brand new 20-40 Gallon AquaTech Filter System that i didn't even know i had until like 2 hours ago.

Is it dangerous for my fish to use a 20-40 Filter System in a 10 Gallon Tank?

Will it unbalance the healthy bacteria and keep the tank too clean?

What is the most reliable brand of test kit out there?
I have tetratest kits for nitrite and nitrate, and aquarium pharmaseuticals test kit for ammonia. The latter being cheaper leads me to think that maybe it is not as good quality or are they all the same?

also, for pH, is it ok to buy one of those round ph tables that you keep in your tank which constanly reads the ph levels, or is it better to go with a test kit?

OK so im upgrading my fish tank from 2 small ones to a 289 l one size is 1268 x 500 x 705 and heres the run down, ill be using new gravel maybe some of the old ones and a fake tree log and ill put a a small power head in the cycled aquarium so when the new one arrives ill put to run in the new one to help the water to cycle ill be adding a diluted solution of jbl denitrol 1/3 bacteria and the rest of aquarium water to put in the new filter, a tetra safe start and about 10 liters of the small aquarium water, do i still have to wait 3 days to put in new fish?, i was thinking of putting a cory catfish to accelerate the cycle after about a few hours.
So how many fish per day can i add after, ill be having in total adding new fish 15 neon tetras, clown pleco,5 male guppies, 4 dwarf gouramis male, 3 cory catfish, little Ludwigia repens Live not plastic and maybe 2 -4 small fish, think will it be ok considering having 1 fish per gallon.

I recently was given a really unique seashell. The person that gave it to me had the intention of me putting it in my fish tank. She brought it back from the ocean last weekend. I am not sure if there is any special way I should clean the shell before placing it with my fish. Thanks.

There are 11 of them in a 55 gallon tank.
Here are some of the fish
An oscare
A pacu
4 rather big goldfish
2 small black fish
2 silver and black fish (small)
1 brown sucker fish
Please don't tell me none of those fish go together I just need to make sure I am feeding enough....I feed slow sinking bites 2-3 times a day at 1/2 capfuls at a time. Is this enough?

This is a very small tank. Just a bit bigger than having a fish bowl. A friend gave it to me and i have it up and running with a filter, heater, etc. The temp ranges from 76 to 78 degrees. What kind of freshwater fish can I get to live in it? I know a beta would work. I know male betas need to live alone. But is there any other kind of fish that could live in such a tank?

I have two 20 gal tanks with 2 young goldfish in each. One of my calico Fantails never seems to put her dorsal fin up. She seems to keep her anal fins folded too. And she only opens her ventral when she needs to swim.
She is very active, social, eats normally, seems happy, and has the same environment as the rest of the fish.
She's been like this for 3 days now.

Should I worry? Is she sick? Not happy (Free Willy style)?

What items are necessary for starting a Saltwater aquarium?

please leave out fish, live rock, gravel, etc.
I plan to have a 55 gallon tank--leave that out of the costs too.

Im looking for items such as the protein skimmer, filter(s), etc.

experience is better than links.

It would be great if u could find items that work well but are relatively low priced.
