All tanks of that age are completely safe for both freshwater and saltwater use.

The salt water wont damage the tank. However salt water is a hole different world compared to freshwater. So I would suggest getting on the Internet and doing a "LOT" of reading before you doing anything. There is a lot of equipment your going to need, and depending how you want to set it up. It gets really expensive...

If your worried about leaks it will leak regardless.

If your asking if you can use the freshwater you've been using in that tank and just add prepackaged aquarium marine salt, then I would empty the tank and add new freshwater after you clean it.

Heres a forum for starting saltwater tanks:

You can have saltwater fish in most tanks depending on the size, saltwater fish require more space than freshwater fish do! Clean your tank out very well, You should be fine!

You should be ok as long as you sanitize the aquarium before hand.
