One solution would be to go directly to a breeder. In New York, you probably have a few aquarium societies, and some of the members are likely to breed their fish. Most clubs have auctions, and some are open to the public. The quality of the fish is far better than you'll see in pets stores as well! See this link to find clubs near you: http://fins.actwin.com/dir/clubs.php?c=1

You might also try the International Betta Congress - they have a New York chapter: http://www.ibcbettas.com/chapters.htm

Also see the website aquabid for advertised female halfmoons - although you'd have to pay shipping on these: http://www.aquabid.com/

I understand your concern. Determining female tail types can be extremely difficult especially for half moons. Read the article I have posted below. It may or may not help especially if you are going to buy fish from a pet store. I wouldn't trust the pet store to tell you if the female is a halfmoon or not. Most of the places I have been to have no idea what tail type the females are but I am willing to bet 100 bucks they are veiltail females.

My best bet would be to find a fish on Aquabid and use those guide lines from the article.

Good luck.

woman bettas are not getting pregnant. additionally while they have eggs they arent that bloated. it must be that your fish has secret bloat or dropsy, that's relatively difficulty-unfastened. I relatively have a fish terrific now this is bloated badly and refuses to die. take your fish out of the tank and positioned it in a 5gal tank or bath with a heater. dont feed it for some days and notice if it improves. do no longer difficulty. bettas can circulate 2 weeks comfortably without foodstuff
