Fish - May 2007

I got this crab from the ocean. It's the type you can eat. I got the bucket and put some warm water. Then, i think it peed this yellow stuff. Then, when I went to check it out again, it had even more yellow stuff ! I'm scared that this is a poison or something. I need it ASAP !!

I have a normal cold water tank and have just got 5 little guppie fish things and one catfish!! I have never seen him eat as he does not come up to top like the others at feeding time, will he be eating the uneaten food that has sunk to the bottom or will i need to buy special food just for him?? Please anyone with useful advice as i dont want to starve the poor thing!!
Also how often would you recommend cleaning the tank out, before i got this fish tank and i had normal goldfish i was cleaning it out once a week with a gravel cleaner and removing about 25% of water and adding freash water. now i have the guppy's and catfish do i carry on with a weekly gravel and part water change??

I have a male and female yellow lab, they have now started to hide in amongst the rocks the male comes out for a swim now and then but the female wont come out at all not even at dinner times, even when the male does come out he just loiters around the area where the female is, i can just see her head between the rocks and she look perfectly healthy, but before this behaviour last week they showed no interest in one another??? Also i have 3 juvenile red tops, they are still a dark brown and about 2 inches, but today they were chasing each other (two males, one female) and the stripes on two of them were really promenant, is that a courtship thing? Do I have a tank full of randy so and so's??!!!

Hi! I have a 189 Litre Tank which i keep cichlids! I have 13 and that includes a Pleco and lobster, they are no bigger than 2.5 inches! I want to do the best by my fish, but got a bit carried away when purchasing them, i am pretty knew to this and really enjoying every aspect of keeping these beautiful fish, from testing water, changing it and feeding them a variety of foods, And of course watching them! Please some advise on my stock levels will be great. Thankyou!!

For some reason, I can't use regular tap water for my aquarium. So, I decided to go purchase a water conditioner that was suppose to rid the water of chlorine as well as chloramine. I follow the directions just as it says, but every time I add my goldfish to the water they immediately die. I have tried to allow them to get used to the water by slowly introducing the treated tap water, but they are still dying. So, I tried a different brand of the water conditioner with my fish and my goldfish just went straight to the bottom of the tank. It was still breathing, but it was acting very strangely. So, I just decided to take it out and put it into water that I bought from the store. Then it started back swimming normally. What could be the problem? It is getting very expensive having to purchase 4-5 gallons of water per week. What am I doing wrong?

Hes getting another one on the other side. I 've tried reading about fish disease, but I can't determine which it could be. His fin on his back at the end kind of looks damaged and hes breathing pretty rapidly. He moves around like hes on a permanent adrenaline rush. When he first came home, he refused to eat which was about 3 1/2 weeks ago. He eats now. Hes a tropical fish but I have no idea what kind. I've read about tuberculosis in fish and am concerned about this fish having it. I have a 9 month old baby boy and a 7 year old daughter. Just want to keep us safe and have no idea who to turn to about this question. Any fish experts out there? Really worried.

i have a couple of questions..and thanks to all of you who help me!

a magnetic cleaner to clean the inside of your tank.. can i wash it with tap water in between different tanks? or is this bad?

if i have like 8-10 assorted african cichlids in a 29 gallon with aqua tech 20-40 gallon filter, do i need anything to add more air, like a pump or a bubble wall?

and do bubble walls help add air?

what is a good size flourescent bulb for my 29 gallon.. i think it came with a 24 inch one and is a 20 watt one enough when it burns out?

and how often should i change out 5 gallons of my 29 gallon tank?

Okay so I have a female guppy.Originally There were about 5 guppies and two mollies total in the tank. All of them except one of my pregnant females died...I cleaned out the tank and stuff but I have no idea how all of them died. Will she be okay by herself or should I buy another fish? If so....Type? i came home to find three fish swimming
it took me a while to find that one of the neon tetras was on the ground dead. the other one was staring into space or so it seemed.
i added some stress coat, and fed them, the gold barb and the bloodfin are fine except the neon thats still alive just goes to the food and brushes it away.

whats wrong with it?
how can i help it??

I bought a 10 gal. tank and gravel for the fish and a partner too!
But both of them are on the bottom, not very frightnened but they're cooperating with each other and they're near eachother alot, but they dont play around, they both sit on the bottom motionlessly. I dont know whats wrong with these two...Am I doing something wrong with these goldfish?
