i have a couple of questions..and thanks to all of you who help me!

a magnetic cleaner to clean the inside of your tank.. can i wash it with tap water in between different tanks? or is this bad?

if i have like 8-10 assorted african cichlids in a 29 gallon with aqua tech 20-40 gallon filter, do i need anything to add more air, like a pump or a bubble wall?

and do bubble walls help add air?

what is a good size flourescent bulb for my 29 gallon.. i think it came with a 24 inch one and is a 20 watt one enough when it burns out?

and how often should i change out 5 gallons of my 29 gallon tank?

thanks a lot you guys!

1. It's a very good idea to wash your glass cleaner well with hot water when going from tank to tank. Anytime you move from tank to tank with equipment you should wash it well. That's one of the main ways you can spread diseases between tanks otherwise.

2 & 3. Bubble walls won't add any significant amount of oxygen to the water in a filtered aquarium. Use them only for decoration under normal circumstances. They are useful when treating a tank with medications that deplete oxygen levels however.

4. You need to always replace a flourescent bulb with the same wattage bulb. The starter and ballast are made to match the bulb wattage.

5. I would suggest doing that water change once a week. Be sure to vacuum the gravel as you go :)

1. It is not bad, jus wash it with some warm water. Dont use soap!!!
2. 8-10 different Cichlids are definitely too many Cichlids for a 29 gallon, unless they are Rams. Other than that the average cichlid gets up to 4 inches and more, once they are full grown they will be much too large. Plus you are stunting their growth. They will never get to their normal size. The filter should be sufficient enough.
3. It does help. In your case probably not needed tho.
4. Do a partial water change every 2 weeks to once a month.

Yes it is a good idea to wash it with tap water, because it contains chlorine which will kill any parasites, worms, or bacteria on it. just make sure you wipe it off good. As for a bubble wall or air stones they are poor at diffusing air into the water. if i were you i would look into getting another hang on the back filters or a small canister filter such as an eheim classic 2213 (on sale at drsfostersmith.com)heres how to get there go to web site, fish, filtration, canister filters and it should be there or on the second page. as for a light reseach on the iternet fish stores. and water changes you should do 25 percent which is about 8 gallons so if you have a 5 gallon bucket do 1.5 buckets, every week. this is manditory with the amount of fish you have in a 29 gallon. and if you have other questions a good place deticated to cichlids is cichlid-forum.com

probably not terrible no soap use net soak or seri clean for the magnet....next you should always use some type of wall, wand, stone etc...as the air bubble comes up it helps break up the nitrogen....nitrogen sinks,,and it also adds oxygen to the tank! just a regular flourescent fresh water bulb should be fine..you may want to consider a under gravel filter along with your aqua tech,.,the aqua tech is ok but there are much better filters...i would recomend 1/3 to 1/2 every 2 to 3 weeks do a water change, make sure you treat your tap water before you put back into the aquarium....

all of what magic says except this fallacy about bubble walls or stones.

air bubbles help to remove co2 and any other harmful gasses by collecting bits on there way up, it helps with absorption of oxygen only in the fact that it disturbs the water tension on the surface of the water and allows that exchange to happen more efficiently however the temperature of the water dictates the amount of oxygen that can be dissolved and there is a limit, secondly remember the air being pumped into the tank is collected outside, so if your stood over the pump smoking a cigar guess whats going into the bubbles. lastly an air stone or bubble wall is usually one part of the reason for algae plumes in the tank, algae needs 3 things, oxygen, food and light, deprived of any of those 3 and its seriously limited.

I have to nitpick on one point with Andy.... A serious algae bloom will reduce oxygen levels in the water, so trying to choke the algae out isn't a very effective way of dealing with it. I'd rather let the algae have the oxygen, and deal with some of the other contributing factors. That way you don't have to worry about whether the FISH are getting enough oxygen. (and the fish are the reason we have an aquarium in the first place, right?)
