Does this look like the spine is bent? This can be caused by a problem with malnutrition, an internal parasite (camallanus), or fish tuberculosis (this is an infection that can be transmitted to people, so be very careful and use glove when working in the tank). Whichever the cause, the affected fish is permanently deformed. You should move the fish to a separate tank to prevent infection of any others if you have more than one, and a large water change would be recommended. If this is the parasite, there will have been eggs laid in the water. You'll need to see the actual parasite to confirm this diagnosis - they look like thin red worms handing out the anus of the fish, but only when the fish is resting - when it starts to move, they pull back inside. Here's a photo of what these look like in a guppy: http://www.alaquairum.net/imagenes/Camallanus1.jpg This can be treated with an antiparasite medication, but because they're inside the fish, it's harder to treat. I've had the best luck with Levamisole HCl, found in farm stores for treating livestock. You can find directions for using this in aquaria by googling "camallanus levamisole".

If you decide to euthanize the affected fish, here are directions for that: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-the-most-humane-way-to-euthanize-a-fish.htm

You can find more info about these conditions in the links below.

Sounds like a swimm bladder problem... unfortunately, this kind of problem is very hard to treat. Try to feed her peas for about a month, if nothing happens... then she might just be stuck like this forever. Though, If she'll continue to eat she can still survive, but without her balance.

The best way to help out a dieing goldfish is to put them in a plastic bag with some of the tank water and put the fish in. Then put the Goldfish in to the freezer for a day. The reason for this is Goldfish are use to being in cold water and in ponds so the cold would just naturally put them into sleep by slowing down the breathing and would eventually die.

hi if the fish is still alive you probably will find it has an internal bacteria problem. you can but a treatment for it but if it is too late and has what is called the death curl the best thing is too put out of its misery. i know its hard on your son as my girls get very upset when a fish dies. the best way to do it is put it in a bowl with enough water just to cover it then add a few drops of clove oil into the water. leave it for about 20 mins and it dies quietly and calmly. i read this in a fish mag and i've tried it too. works really well. better than having to chop its head off believe me. best of luck with the fish if its not too late

we need more info, please answer these first:
what size is the tank?
how long have you have the fish?
did you cycle the tank?
what kind of goldfish is it?

it MAY be a swim bladder problem as someone said above but that would most likely be good news, it's not at all hard to treat. please don't feed your goldfish only peas for a month, the poor thing will surely die. however, I'm not convinced it's a swim bladder problem.

are you sure its not dead? the problem could have been fin rot and if you have any other fish in the same tank then get them out of there but it may probebly be to late. there isnt a cure for this (well they sell stuff in petshops but it doesnt work). buy a new fish that looks the same for your son and say you saved his fish

if it is breathing take it to the vet, but it sounds like the most humane thing to do would be to chop it's head off( yes it sounds gory and horibble ), but, it puts the animal out of pain, sometimes there is nothing that can be done.

well either to vet quick or put the little fish down so he don't suffer anymore. do not put down the toilet this is so cruel !

Did he have a few too many last night? It was probably the curry afterwards.
