Fish - May 2007

I have only a few fish, guppys, neons, cory cats. 150 Gal tank with slate rock, gravel and sand. Live plants (one type, momo?) Fern like straight growing, 74" max. I had an issue with algae, first thin black then green then thick spongy green, now thin and thick green with the bearded brown on EVERYTHING.
Water test says, Nitrate is 0, Nitrite is 0, Hardness is 120ppm, Alka/Buff is 120ppm, pH is looking like 8.4, Ammonia is 0.
Ugh......Am I going Brackish?! What do I do. Add pHMinus? then what? I can buy fish, shrimp and plants for the algae issue as well as scrubbing, but dude, whats up with my water! Could extra conditioner help this? My main issue was and acted like Nitrate issues, but does not seem to be it.

My three year old pored hand sanitizer in my fish tank this morning! I did not realize what had transpired for at least 10 to 15 minutes I took the fish out but I don't know if there is any hope, should I clean the tank and put them back right away or should I wait a few days to use the same tank again?

I got some fish in the pond and also in a tank in the house, and I was just thinking to myself the other day... don't they get bored?

I mean all they do is just swim around aimlessly in the same bit of water all day, the only other things being eating once a day and occasionally trying to hump each other.

Is that really enough to keep them amused? Or is boredom only a human trait?

My fish (I only own one) is surrounded by white stuff. I think his scales are shedding, but he's my first fish, so I'm not sure. There's also a long white strand (not the best description) hanging near his bottom back fin. Can anyone tell me if this is natural or if he's sick? What should I do if he is sick?

Any suggestions on what type of fish? Should I leave the light on all weekend for it since it will be pitch black? What type of food or just feed it good Friday and Monday?

I have a 2.5 gallon tank I started up about two or three weeks ago. I had a small bout of ich that I successfully treated last week with QuickCure. Now the surface of the tank has this fine, velvety cloud on top which I don't remember being there before. I put in a fresh filter bag. Am I just being paranoid or is there something I should be aware of. Thanks!

I have had this beautiful for a month or more now but still fail to identify its breed.I have taken care of it the way most cyprinids are cared for because it has a cyprinid look, I'm assuming its from that family. However, I need a zoom down on its species to fully understand its needs.Apologies for the headless shot by the way, it swims fast.

As stupid as that question may sound, any fishies I've ever kept [goldfishies] would start getting sick after a month. Any ideas on how to keep fish alive longer?

I have two goldfish: Klouse and Goldie and a little over a month ago I noticed that one of Goldies eyes were bugged out. I asked a question and was told that it was more than likely Popeye, I even called the petstore and they agreed. So I bought a pkg of Maracyn-two by Mardel to treat it. I treated both fish, since they share the tank and the petstore said it would be best. Well about a day or two before I got the meds Goldie got a 'zit' like thing right above her eye. The petstore and you all agreed it was due to the popeye. So anyway, I treated both the fish with 2 treatments of the medication. And inbetween the treatments I cleaned 1/2 the tank of water like told and did exactly as directed. Well just like 10 minutes ago I went to feed the fish and looked in the tank. Normally, I just feed them, don’t pay much attention to them. Well anyways I noticed that she had the white ‘zit’ like thing again, it had went away. And her eye appeared large again, but it never really went down. I called my husband into look and he noticed that Klouse’s eyes are both popped out. I have no idea what to do. Should I treat them again? I plan on calling the pet store in the morning. I know that if left untreated it can be fatal and it can also turn into something else, not sure of name, which can be transmitted to humans. So, the question is, what should I do? My husband suggested just flushing them, but I love all animals, I just can’t kill them….

And how many times a day should you feed them?

I'm worried my husband is overfeeding them. He's worried about them going hungry.

Yesterday I saw in an aquarium at the school where I work a roughly fist-sized black creature covered in 3"- to 4"-long spikes, with a few red markings on the body. It was a salt water tank. Can anybody tell me what it is?

Trying to figure out what's going on with my Molly's and Swordtail. My Black Molly appears to have its belly area deflated and "sits" on the bottom. My Silver Molly swims/treads vertically and also appears to have its belly area deflated. My swordtail won't get off the bottom and appears to have his belly deflated.

Everyone else in the community appear to be doing fine.

All chemistry levels in the tank are within my test kits guidelines except for Nitrate (I've asked how to reduce under separate question). Not too far over 40ppm though.

I'd consider my tank's up-keep fairly good so I'm thinking it's not a water chemistry issue.

My fish keeping books only mention fish diseases that deal with visible parasites.

I caught a brief article on swim bladder infections. I don't have a lot of experience with disease other than the usual (ick).

Can anyone please be so kind as to elaborate? Maybe with a diagnosis or treatment recommendation?

Thank you kindly.
