Fish - May 2007

I decided to buy a betta end of this summer and so some friends of mine bought a 39 litres tank for me. However i am not sure about the size (or style: black front sealing restricts the view a bit) as i would like to buy one or two fish to keep the betta company (yes, i am aware of the limited options as the betta is territorial).
As i have never kept any fish (my flatmate has though) before i am slightly reluctant to go for a tank smaller than 50litres and at the moment think of purchasing a 100 litres tank (clearseal b shape).
however is it actually worth it?
I mean, the only "pretty to look at" fish i could keep would be the betta and the 100 litres seems a bit of a waste.
On the other hand i think the 39litres would be a bit small to inlcude 1 or 2 smaller fish or some african dwarf frogs or armano shrimps.
It would be a great help if someone who has tried both options could advise me, or suggest an option i havent considered yet.
(has to be betta, i really want one)
Thanks
x

I ignored it.. thinking he would be ok.. Then when I woke up this morning he was at the bottom... his body was laying flat ... no movement.. I looked for my other fish.. he was at the bottom still breathing.. body bouncing flat ...he's breathing but he is laying on his side.. I want to know .. WHATS WRONG WITH MY FISH..? I dont have a clue as far as whats going on.. I need some advice.. NO RUDE REPLIES.. YOU WILL BE REPORTED!!

I have 5 new guppies and 1 little catfish in my tank and used to clean my previous fish out weekly with a 20% water change with the gravel cleaner and not take the fish out of the tank. My old fish were just normal goldfish so they were always ok but my guppies and catfish are tiny and dont want to stress them out. Would you take the fish out and clean the tank or leave them in???

I was recently given a new fish tank stand as my old one didn't fit into my new place --- I have a ten gallon glass freshwater tank...my old stand was basically like a wooden table with a ledge around the edge so the tank wouldn't fall off and the bottom of the tank sat on a secure wooden plank...but my new stand doesn't have either---my new stand is a stable metal frame (can support the weight of myself and my oversized boyfriend---does not wobble or wiggle) however my new stand does not have a bottom to it so there is no support for the bottom of the tank in the middle where the glass is! If left on that stand for a long time-with no support for the glass bottom of the tank, will the glass on the bottom of the tank break?!
should I cut a piece of wood to attach to the stand as reinforcement for the glass bottom of the tank-or can the glass in the tank with stand all the weight of the water and other stuff in the tank?

My 10 yr old daughter brought home 2 fiddler crabs from school today. We have provided all the necessary things it needs to survive (water, land and food) and have them in a 10 gallon aquarium (with a lid). My question, and it may sound dumb, is can they climb out of the aquarium? The sand is only about 3 inches high in the tank. These ugly creatures are in my bedroom, and I just want to sleep peacefully, without having to worry about them crawling out.

I got him last Monday, one week ago. He was in a small, unfiltered tank. Just switched him to a filtered 3 gallon on Sunday. He was happy and fine. Looked well. This morning he was hiding a lot, but I thought it was ok. Came home from work tonight and he is on the bottom a lot. His fins and gills look fine. He has no white spots and no tears anywhere. He just sits there and comes up for air occasionally. I got worried because his eyes do look a bit bulgy, but not too much. So, I ran out a few hours ago and bought Maracyn-Two. I just put it in the water. But, I am worried. I don't really see a problem. Should I buy something else to put in the water? Also, there is a white substance on one of my plants in the tank. I am going to remove that now.

I keep 5 tetra, 2 rainbow fish, and one decorated guppie in a 29 gal tank. They have been well for about a month, and have just begun nipping at oneanother.

Well, My 2nd damsel died today with the dreaded ich. I guess, i did not learn about the qt tank quick enough to help him survive. Now i have a newly(got my first good readings 3 days before i noticed the ich) cycled 90 gallon tank with nothing, but live rock, and the dreaded ich. This is almost depressing enough to make me give up, but i will not. Now, i have read that i cant put any fish in my tank for like 8 weeks(this is longer than it took me to cycle) due to the ich possibly living on my rock and substrate. Can i add anything like a cleaner crew, snails, anything? also, how do i know its gone, and where did it come from? all the liverock, damsels, live sand, everything i have came from the same lfs. did i get it there? again this is a new cycled tank

how long can they stay in before it effects thier health there is two of them I was thinking about getting one of those small round pools that are about 2.5 feet diameter to put out side and then give them to a pet store when winter sets in.
and can buttery fly koi and regular koi interbreed because one of them has longer fins but not as long as a butterfly
