There are two kinds of glass is used for aquariums.
1- Float glass
2- acrylic

The thickness of the glass depends on the size of the tank.
For 15 gallon tank they use 5mm Float glass. For 55 gallon(48''x18''x18') they use 8mm or 10mm. and so on.

and bigger aquariums they use acrylic.

In OSAKA aquarium JAPAN they had used acrylic for the biggest tank in the world.

Depends on the aquarium, my first attempts were just plain window glass although I never put anything over 3ft together back then. Now most aquariums are made from 10mm float glass, I've not used the stuff but I'd imagine it'd still make sense to make your own if you were that inclined.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking. It's just glass...or acrylic. The differences in the glass has to do with the thickness of glass required to hold amounts of water. Smaller aquariums require less thick glass than larger ones. Is this what you're asking?

The thicker walls are not glass they are plexiglass. Glass is not strong enough to hold back huge amounts of water like the display tanks at aquariums. Otherwise glass is glass.
