I keep 5 tetra, 2 rainbow fish, and one decorated guppie in a 29 gal tank. They have been well for about a month, and have just begun nipping at oneanother.

Black skirts are naturally a bit nippish and will fight among themselves somewhat, that's totally normal. It is odd that they would do such damage to each other, it's usually not as bad as that. If one is significantly larger than the rest and seems to be the bully, you may have to return that one and trade it in.

Shoaling and schooling are used interchangeably and are both considered to be correct in most cases. A school is a large group of fish, a shoal is a large school of fish. Schooling is the term defined by most dictionaries as a group of fish coming together and swimming together.

Black Skirt Tetras like to live in large groups. The aggression is normal but can be reduced by keeping a larger shoal. 5 Tetras is still kind of small for a shoal. I would up your group to 8 or even 10. Your tank should be able to handle the extra Tetras (depending on the size of your Rainbow Fish).

Are any of your black skirts larger than the others? Size difference sometimes causes aggression as they try to establish a hierarchy. These fish aren't aggressive so I'm kind of stymied myself.
There are normally 2 things that cause black skirt tetra aggression: size differences and keeping fewer than 6 which prevents the "shoaling" (not schooling) mentality. But 5 is pretty close to 6...hmmmm

Black skirts nip at each other. They don't have much of an upper lip to begin with...
