Yesterday I cleaned my tank (removed 15% of the water, vaccumed the gravel) and replaced the water with treated water (and Bullseye 7.0 since the tanks water was at about 7.0) after about 6-7 hours later I checked all the levels of ammonia, pH, nitrate, etc. Everything was okay. The pH was at about 7.1. Today, I checked the pH and such again, and everything was good. Suddenly, about 20minutes ago, all my fish darted to the surface and seem to be gasping for air, and the pH dropped to an astounding 6.0. What would cause this huge change of pH levels, and what is this pH doing to my fish, and the water?

i am thinking about giving away my fish except for my 7 glolite tetras and i might keep my one australian rainbowfish. i have a 30 gallon tank with heater and filter and light. i want to have all fish of about teh size of my glolites, what are some suggestions. i want for teh small fish to kind of school together and swim all around, right now my glolites stay near teh bottom and are really afraid when the other fish come near them(i have a dwarf gourami[main problem], 2 guppies[minor problem] on top of my glolites and rainbowfish)

what are some good sepcies to add to my tank that are glolite tetra size and will be pretty to look at and interesting to watch?i would say i am an intermidiate fish keeper.

much appreciated!

I have a 55 gallon fresh water community tank that's been up and running for several years. I'm having a difficult time getting my Nitrate level down to 40 ppm and below.
I've been doing good with my weekly water changes of at least 35%. I also use a gravel siphon and clean accordingly when removing water. Fish are fed once a day with careful attention not to over-feed. Additionally, water is checked once a week and all Ammonia, PH and Nitrite levels are within compliance of my test kits recommendations.
Last year, I upgraded my canister filter to a Magnum 350 with dual bio-wheels. Fish store suggested getting rid of both of my power heads that I used to run my under-gravel filter.
Long story short, I have the Magnum 350 in addition to one power head running my (single plate) under-gravel filter.
Additionally, I also check my tap water for Nitrate and the readings are consistently 0ppm. Also using Diamond-blend in my Magnum 350.

How can I get the Nitrate down? Thanks!

I was looking at the fish section in walmart today and I noticed that they had this new amazing looking fish called a green pufferfish. I was going to buy it on the spot but then I decided to do my homework first. What I found was that these fish need tanks no smaller than 30 gallons. My biggest tank is 10 gallons. Is that enough room for 1 pufferfish? Should I get more than one?

I have a black molly and a silver one...i recently introduced all of my fish to their new home...a 29 gallon tank from a 10 gallon one. I noticed yesterday that they have standoffs or something. They will get next to each other and their dorsal fins will be up as far as they go and they like spaz in circles around each other. They never touch each other or attack the other one they just do that for a couple seconds then go their separate ways. Any ideas on what they are doing?

I also have a creamcicle molly and neither of them bother that one.

My female beta has tons of bubbles but my male beta hardly has any. i'm wondering if he'd use the females bubble nest if i put them together? Or is that a sign that the male isn't ready to breed? My female has all the signs of breeding...fat, (there seem to be eggs. she's light in color so u can kinda c her insides.) eats like a pig, very active, and has a white dot underneath. My male hasn't eaten anything except blood worms since i got him a few days ago. Should i leave them apart a bit longer? He's very active and all...just doesn't eat. The one i had before would take up to three pellets per feeding!!! i guess i'm just worried. He also doesn't eat that smaller flack food. Please reply as soon as possible

I heard that you don't count scavengers in the load for your tank. That you only count the normal fish, is this true?

for a school project we have made a mini ecosystem with potato plant at top, a spider (predator) then flies coming from below where there is the decomposition section of a rotting apple, grass, dirt, then sand and gravel, next is the aquarium with rocks. we want to add a stickleback fish instead of a guppie. do they live longer? if so how long? the water we added has been de chlorinefied w/ a substance and before that we "made it rain" by pouring water through the system. HOW CAN WE KEEP OUR FISH ALIVE THE LONGEST? any suggestions will help. thanks. if you dont know then what type of fish stays alive the longest???

I have now lost my second female angel because she was egg bound. Is there a way to stop this from happening? I feed a mixed diet of brine and flake my water is changed weekly and I have very good filtration. I was told that there is nothing that can be done and this and it is caused by inbreeding. I am not sure about the answer so if anyone has any experience with this it would be a great help.

I have had a 5 gallon tank with 4 female Bettas for about 4 months now. I've done about 95% water changes every and replace my whisper filter cart. about once a month. Recently I have discovered the growth of hat I think might be Brown Algae. At first I thought it might have been from a few stones I put in the tank but it spread to the fake plants and walls and seems to stay in one corner where the filter dumps water.

I also changed bulbs from stock to more expensive blue/white florescents about a month ago. Light stays on from about 7am til 11pm but my room is pitch black during the day with ZERO sunlight in a garden unit apt.

What could be the cause of this? Too many water changes? Too much water taken out during each water change? Too much light? Not enough light? Should I feed once a day instead of twice a day?

How harmful is this brown stuff. All the fish seem pretty healthy. just need advice on how to prevent or rid of the brown stuff.

Thanks in advance

I noticed a few days ago a new growth of small tubular structures on some of my live rock. Today there are 5 times more. Last night I attempted to catch something peeping out of some of them, thinking it might be a feather duster or Christmas tree worm, but found nothing. Any ideas?
