I'd have to say it would be legal in most cases, although some states have laws against selling wildlife native to that state, or species that are considered a "nuisance". There are some crayfish that are bred specifically for the aquarium trade like the "electric blue" crayfish. You'd have to check the fish and game laws where you live to know for certain, but most suppliers are aware of what's legal in which states and don't ship species to states where they can't be sold. But there are probably a few who would do that anyway, if they thought they could make money and not be caught.

No, i think they should be fine alone. BNut, it is always good to have more fish than a solitary fish or crustaceans. (with the exception of a betta fish.)
