Do you think the 1 inch of fish per gallon rule is accurate?

If no, what "rule" would you consider accurate?

thanks

I have read in many places such as liveaquaria.com and about.com that Guppies can live from 64-82F...

Is this true?

If yes, could I keep a few in a non heated 5 gallon tank?

thanks

I just purchased 3 Black Skirt Tetras for my new aquarium, and they seem to be chasing each other and sometimes even nipping. I was under the impression that Tetras were peaceful, community starter fish, so I am surprised by this aggression. How can I prevent it?

my fish pond water from going "murky", it can stay clear for a while, then goes yucky, we clean the pond out, and sometimes it will stay clear for weeks, other times it looks yucky again straight after, i am sure the fish are going to pack their bags and leave home soon!!!

I am going to be setting up a 55 gallon and I am still working on planting my 29 gallon the way I want it. I was looking at foreground plants and found some interesting carpeting plants but I'm not sure if there would be any benefit to adding these to my aquarium. Adding them looks like it would make vaccuming my gravel more of a chore than it should be.

We found our approx. 8" pleco on the floor when we woke up 2 mornings ago. He thrashed when picked up so we put him back in the tank. I immediately put in some stress coat and a little salt, and later fed him some blood worms. After a few hours he seemed to be doing okay, even attaching to the side, but now his fins and skin are sloughing, full of holes and generally look terrible. He just lays at the bottom of the tank and rarely moves, but is still breathing and briefly sucked on an algae wafer last night. We don't know how long he was out of the water. Does anyone know how long a pleco can be out and survive, and how can I further treat him at this point? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

I`m planning a 240 gallon salt or fresh water tank. My question is should I have the tank drilled for overflow`s just in case I do decide to start a saltwater tank in the future? Will these overflows help or hurt on a freshwater tank? What kind of filter would you recommend for a freshwater or salt water tank? Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.

I have 2 common goldfish. 1 male 1 year, 1 female 6 years, both under 4 inches but the female is about twice the male size. Everytime I feed them the male always gets to the food first even though the food is scattered around the tank. The male, I think, is eating too much. How do I make sure that the female & male get the right amount of food??? I use a straw to attach some flake food to the end of it and place it slightly under the water to give to the female but she's scared of getting it. The male swims up to it a takes it sometimes. The female is scared. I soak some flakes so they sink to the bottom where the female is but the male always gets to them first.

Is it okay to feed the fish every other day???

Also, why do my fish follow each other??? First it was the male following the female, now it's vice-versa and they switch often. What does this mean if it means anything at all.

Thanks for your help.

I have two common goldfish (1 male, over 1 year, about 2 inchs.) and (1 female, 6 years, about 3 1/2 inchs) which I just got on Saturday from a friend. They are in a 10 gallon tank right now. I also have a 6 gallon tank which a male Betta is in now.

Questions:

1. I need a new filter, what are the best ones for a 10 gallon tank??? I think my tank needs more oxygen.

2. When doing a water change, how much should I do (15% - 30%) and how often???

3. If there is poo that I can get from the tank, should I take it out??? It's floating on the top.

4. How do I do water changes, seriously???

5. When doing a water change for my goldfishies can I place the goldfishes in the 6 gallon tank (which the Betta is in right now) and move the Betta to a smaller tank temporarily???
Basically, will it be okay to put the goldfishes in Betta fish tank water???

6. Should I remove and clean some of the gravel then return it???

Answer whatever you want. Thanks for your help.

My largest tank is a 55 gallon - I want a 100 gallon or larger freshwater tank as my next one (so addictive!) but want to make sure I know what I am doing before I begin. Things I have no knowledge of - overflow - canister filters - protein skimmers - and well, anything else that I don't need with my 55 and smaller tanks. Please provide any information you have and links if possible.

I just was given a brand new fluval 205 canister filter. I am trying to find someone who might have experience with both types of filters and can tell me why cansiters are better (if they are) than others. I currently use pengiun bio wheel filters.
