I am going to be setting up a 55 gallon and I am still working on planting my 29 gallon the way I want it. I was looking at foreground plants and found some interesting carpeting plants but I'm not sure if there would be any benefit to adding these to my aquarium. Adding them looks like it would make vaccuming my gravel more of a chore than it should be.

If you want to add a foreground plant, you would not gravel vac. The carpet would utilize the detrius that it collected. Other than looks, there isn't a huge benefit, but I really like the carpeted look of planted tanks, especially when the entire substrate is covered. Carpeting plants are typically easy to maintain, but need high lighting and ferts to spread out and thrive.

And if you add Malasyian trumpet snails or kuhlii loaches, they'll help keep the area around the base of the plants clean. Just don't overfeed, or you can end up with an overpopulation of snails.

The carpet plants aren't just good for fry, they encourage the growth of microorganisms the fry feed on.

Everything echodude said except carpet plants make a great hiding place for fry. If you plan on breeding it will help keep them from being eaten.
