Are there any species of crab that I would be able to put into a community tank? Or will they just eat the fish?

The most popular crabs that you see will be the fiddler crabsa nd the red-clawed (or Thai) crabs. Both of these need to have some salt in their water and a way to get completely out of the water.

They can be kept with fish that will tolerate some salt in the water, but you'll have to be careful to choose fish that won't eat them - when they molt, their new exoskeleton takes a while to harden, so they are vunerable to your fish (and each other) for a while when this happens! Give them some hiding places for times when they molt.

I have red clawed crabs in my tank. They have a floating island so they can get out of the water and hopefully not out of the tank. They will also take up residence in the filter if large enough.

As for eating the other fish. Yes they will every once in a while catch a fish and eat it. But just like the wild it is the sick slow moving fish. They will not be able to catch the healthy fish.

Also limit the number of crabs as they will kill each other also. Best to get the quantity you want at the same time so they don't have severe territory fights.

I have some small crabs in my tropical tank - you have to be more worried about fish eating the crabs depending on what fish you have in your tank - an aquatic shop would be able to advise you on whether your fish are suitable to have crabs living with them.

They will just eat the fish - that's what crabs eat - they will love your tank though!

I used to feed crawdads to my oscars, but if you have a community tank with pretty mild fish you might be able to get away with having them in their. I would think that they would have to be semi-aggressive (barbs, silver dollars, etc) that way the crayfish would not eat them. If you do go this route make sure your tank has a very tight lid they will swim to the top and jump out.
