Most can. The Astraea snail (in saltwater) can't unless it's next to somethng solid (like the glass or a rock) that it can grab onto with it's foot. See the section on Astraea: http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-05/rs/index.php

That's actually a very good and interesting question.
A snail may be doomed if that happens, unless their weight and strength can roll them back to the crawling position. Of if a breeze helps them along.
I know a tortoise is often out of luck if they end up upside down with no human around to put them back on their feet. If hot enough, a tortoise can die if it can't crawl to cover.

I believe so. I once saw a cornucopia snail fall on its back. It stayed upside down for a while, but it managed to twist the soft part of its body towards the bottom and flip itself over.

Yes as it starts to come back out of it's shell the weight will be distributed so that it can roll back over.

Nerite snails can sometimes have problems flipping back over after being upside down. Not all the time, but sometimes they will die.

Yes, sometimes when they go into their shell, they pull their "foot" in to close the door to their shell house. When they want to come out, they extend their foot and turn themselve upright.
