I just was given a brand new fluval 205 canister filter. I am trying to find someone who might have experience with both types of filters and can tell me why cansiters are better (if they are) than others. I currently use pengiun bio wheel filters.

They're not really better, even if some think so, just different. Both have proven to be equally effective on the tank. I like them because they hold more media, and are more versatile in the media they can hold. I also like that I can put the spray bar under the water so that it's completely silent, yet point the spraybar up toward the surface and still accomplish aerating with it, and how it creates a riverine like flow of water across the tank instead of the water being poured straight down.

Another advantage that Ghapy didn't mention is that in a canister, the water is forced through the media, so you're sure the water gets filtered. If a hang-on gets clogged, the water flows over the top of the media or around the uptake tube and doesn't get filtered, or at least not as well. So in this aspect, I'd have to say the canister is better.

Although the biowheels are good for biological filtration, compare the amount of surface area for bacteria on the media of both. You may be getting better filtration if you use the canister.

My personal opinion is that yes, canister filters are better. They are great for biological filtration, because of the many trays that you can add media to. They are typically more powerful than HOB filters. Canister filters usually house a pump at the top of the filter so if a sand substrate is used, and some is pulled into the intake, the pump is not compromised, unlike many HOB's. Finally, the canisters are sooo much quieter. I say yes, they are better.
