The male will attack the female unless both of them are in good breeding condition. You can tell they are in good breeding condition when the male is active, has a bubble nest and is flaring alot. The female will be brightly colored, fat with eggs and have a small white dot under her belly called an egg spot.

Hope that helps

they will fight until the female is ready to mate. After that they will mate breifly and the male will begin egg watching and the female should leave. But she will eat the eggs and the babies wont survive if they are left in a tank with any adult fish as they will get eaten. The rest of the time both male and female will fight and one will probably die, most likely the female.

Ok!
First to breed them you have to start conditioning the pair for about 2 weeks by feeding them high protein foords such as blood worms and brine shrimp. Then put the male in the tank first and leave him there for a day or two so he can get used to the tank. Then at about the second day put the female in a jar in the tank so he cant get to her. he will go crazy and flare up heaps! you can cut a styraphome cup vertically in half and tape it to the side. he should start to build his bubble nest. if the female shows stripes going up and down and she is facing down she is ready. put her in the tank and they should chase each other a bit then they will meet under his bubble nest and he will wrap arround her and squeeze the eggs out of her. she will be semi unconsious at this time. he will then put the eggs in his mouth and spit them in his nest. he may repeat this. when he starts chasing her away take her out. he'll look after the eggs and they will hatch within 2- 3 days. when they start to swim horizontal take the male out or he will eat them. feed them liquid fry food or tiny fry flakes and look after them. at about 6 weeks you'll have to seperate the males into jars and tadda youve bred betta's

mating bettas is very complex. most likely unless you have a whole tank for breeding the bettas in they will just fight and you will end up with beat up fish.

betta fish are very picky about their tank mates-and the worse thing you can give them as a tank mate is another betta---the only people who should attempt to breed bettas are professional breeders or people supervised by professional breeders because, yes, they will kill each other if even one LITTLE thing goes wrong...
if you want to get your betta a tank mate, then you need to follow some basic guidelines:
1) no fish bigger than the betta
2) no colorful fish besides the betta
3) no aggressive fish besides the betta
4) no fish with large or flowing fins besides the betta
5) no more than one betta!
6) do not over crowd the tank!
I have a ten gallon tank with 4 zebra danios and an african dwarf frog in mine---african dwarf frogs kick butt! other fun things to put with bettas include ghost shrimp and snails...all unusual pets that are aquatic, easy to care for, and FUN
hope this helps...

since you have a female betta and want to breed it with a male, i would suggest that you get two more females.

if you do get a male, get another female, for it Willl want to choose. then, it wil have eggs, and put the female, and male and the eggs separate. soon enough they will hatch.
