My 10 yr old daughter brought home 2 fiddler crabs from school today. We have provided all the necessary things it needs to survive (water, land and food) and have them in a 10 gallon aquarium (with a lid). My question, and it may sound dumb, is can they climb out of the aquarium? The sand is only about 3 inches high in the tank. These ugly creatures are in my bedroom, and I just want to sleep peacefully, without having to worry about them crawling out.

Yes, they are the little ugly creatures. These are only about 2 to 3 inches. The sand in the tank is only about 3 inches high and there's nothing they could climb on to get out. I have a screen lid on the top so they can have air. I do have aquarium salt in the water for the crabs. My daughter's teacher made sure they had everything they needed to live before giving them to my daughter. One of the crabs tries to climb up the side of the tank, but usually falls (now that is funny). The big crab usually stands on the smaller one, which is pretty funny, too (even walked that way along the side of the tank). Yes, they can be entertaining and I guess once I "forget" that they are there, I won't be so nervous about them getting out, but these things are all new to me so I just wanted to make sure.

I think you should be fine. They're the little 2-3 inch fiddler crabs you find in the pet store, right? I used to have four of them (two males and two females) in a 10 gallon aquarium, with only half a lid. The sand and rocks went almost half way up the side of the tank, but they never even came close to getting out. They couldn't get a grip on the glass at all. They just did a lot of claw waving and territorial dancing.

So, rest assured. They may be ugly, but they're very entertaining! Hopefully you'll grow to love them. :)

They will climb, but only if there is something for them to climb (wood, rocks, air tubing, power cord to a submersible filter). If you've got any of these, you'll need a screen like the first answerer suggested.

They should also be given some salt in their water. These crabs are sold as freshwater, but they live on mud flats in areas where freshwater and saltwater mix. If you keep them with a little salt, they'll do better for you. Use salt without added iodine (no table salt, use kosher, canning, pickling, or rock salt, or better yet, marine salt mix) and add 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon per gallon of water.
