I have two goldfish: Klouse and Goldie and a little over a month ago I noticed that one of Goldies eyes were bugged out. I asked a question and was told that it was more than likely Popeye, I even called the petstore and they agreed. So I bought a pkg of Maracyn-two by Mardel to treat it. I treated both fish, since they share the tank and the petstore said it would be best. Well about a day or two before I got the meds Goldie got a 'zit' like thing right above her eye. The petstore and you all agreed it was due to the popeye. So anyway, I treated both the fish with 2 treatments of the medication. And inbetween the treatments I cleaned 1/2 the tank of water like told and did exactly as directed. Well just like 10 minutes ago I went to feed the fish and looked in the tank. Normally, I just feed them, don’t pay much attention to them. Well anyways I noticed that she had the white ‘zit’ like thing again, it had went away. And her eye appeared large again, but it never really went down. I called my husband into look and he noticed that Klouse’s eyes are both popped out. I have no idea what to do. Should I treat them again? I plan on calling the pet store in the morning. I know that if left untreated it can be fatal and it can also turn into something else, not sure of name, which can be transmitted to humans. So, the question is, what should I do? My husband suggested just flushing them, but I love all animals, I just can’t kill them….

Mind you, when I say two treatments. That means two seperate boxes of the medication.

My biggest concern is how big is your fish home? goldfish do best in at least 10 gallons per fish. If you want a happy goldie and klouse go for at least 20 gallons. Fish in smaller aquariums -- goldfish particularly -- kind of play a twisted version of biological survivor. its survival of the fittest. whoever can stand the most toxic water wins.

as far as i know fish can only transmit tb to humans and your fish would have had to have been infected with tb somewhere else.

there are many things you can do to euthanize fish. is that what you are asking for? i personally don't recommend a specific way because no matter what you recommend someone will disagree with you. if you do research on the internet you will find multiple methods of fish euthanization.

oh -- and the zit thing? are you sure its not wen? sometimes they grow little wen lumps on their heads -- check out pics of pom poms for extreme verisions of wen lumps.

Most often, you see this in Goldfish being maintained in water which is of poor quality, and especially when high ammonia levels exist. Tests should be run on your system's water, to establish that the Ammonia levels are safe and low.
Popeye, or exophthalmia is the condition of an eye wherein it protrudes from its normal position in a socket.
For years , the causes of pop eye were few, and almost all literature surveyed suggested it was a mycobacterial infection, or Tuberculosis forming an abscess or granuloma behind the eye.
In this case, that may very well be true, and you should be aware that there are few drugs effective against fish tuberculosis, there are even fewer that can access the space behind the eye. In humans, these infections are still hard to treat becasue the space behind the eye is isolated from real good blood supply. As well, tuberculosis, particularly the one for fish, is transmissable to humans through open sores. I'm not saying it's always TB, but it could be, so avoid contact.
Other causes of pop eye include viral and other causes of inflammation to the vessels leading to the eyeball itself, and trauma ranks high in this group. If the eye does not get picked OFF when it protrudes like this, it is entirely possible that it could actually pull back in as the swelling behind the eye reduces.
Let me say a word or two more about bacterial or TB pop eye. It spreads slowly, and gets its foothold through stress. Be sure water quality is optimal, and that the diet and temperature are perfect for the chosen species you maintain. You can try antibiotics with this, even injected ones if the fish warrants it, but I really suggest you not get your hopes up.
There is a pic below of what a goldfish with pop eye looks like. Maracyn is the proper treatment but doesn't seem to be working.

Treat them again. This time dont do any water changes during treatment. The water will get a little cloudy, but that is not harmful. Do the full treatment then after the fish are better do a 50 to 75 percent water change and clean the filter well. Normally you wouldnt ever do a big water change tlike this, but tin this case, your fish might continually get sick unless you clean the water out good. Maracyn 2 should work just fine.

I would suggest treating them again, but this time with a different medication. Maracyn -2 is a reasonable choice for pop eye and I would normally suggest it as an option, but ... there are some bacteria that are becoming resistant to that antibiotic. I would suggest you treat this time with Furanace. It's one of the "big guns" in aquarium antibiotics because it is very well absorbed by fish and treats internal infections very well.

What you are thinking of that can be transmitted to humans sis probably Fish TB. As long as you see no large open sores on your fish you need not worry about fish TB. It's really quite rare in the aquarium trade.
