I'm thinking of getting a little miniture schnauzer girl puppy in June. One of my concerns is that I work 9 am-5 pm and she will be left in the house while I'm out. I would take her for a good long walk in the morning and then hope she sleeps for abit when I leave. My dad will call in at lunch time and take her out, I'm still concerned that she'll be lonely.

The breeder says that his daughter has a pup and she's fine when her daughter works all day. What does anyone else think? Do you guys leave your dogs unattended when your at work?

I understand about 'it depends on how you raise the pet' but I just mainly want to know if it would make a good pet for a family of a toddler (2 and a half) and a 15 yr old, I'm thinking of getting one for th family.

He was fine for 6 years. But almost over night, he started scratching like crazy. Its driving ME NUTS. We didnt change his dog food. The Vet claims he must have allergies but why after 6 years did this start? No Flees and acording to the vet no parrisites. This started 4 Months ago and yes after the pet food recall we did change his food but his alergies started many Months b4 this so that isnt the problem. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I put frontline on my dog, yet I have found 2 ticks on my dog. The first I removed easily with a dog tick remover. However, the second one on the head is the problem. The body came of, but the head is embedded. I put a little frontline on top of the area. My question is- I am a nurse, and now how to put in stitches, so should I lance the area, then remove the head of the tick, and suture it up, if needed-I do not think she'll need it sutured, but just in case, then put some antibiotic ointment on it or should I wait until the vets office is open tomorrow? She is showing no signs or symptoms of lyme disease.

Hi,
I am bringing home my pup in just 7 days and have decided on crate training him (ie taking him out the back every hour). What I am confused about is what to do with him while I am away from home?

I have a big playpen with his crate in it for him to hang out in when I am not home and I was planning on placing an 'inside toilet' in the playpen area such as training pad. . . (as he obviously doesn't have access to the backyard while I am out!)

I have just been told to not use the inside training pad/toilet if i am intending on teaching the pup to go outside only and that the training pad would just confuse him. This seems ridiculous! Maybe it would confuse him as to where he is supposed to go but what other options are there if you are not at home!

I recently adopted an Australian Shepard/ Catahoula Leapord X dog. His previous name was Toby, which we don't think suits him at all. He's lively and lovable and very smart! He is six months old and loves his Kongs! We have considered: Max, Spock, Frankentsein, Baxter, Loki, and Kong. We like these names because they suit his friendly yet strong personality. Do you have any suggestions or votes for any of the names we like?

I have a very expensive lab and I would like to have him "fixed" and computer chipped. How much does this cost? My son just decided sex was better than this dog and left him for a new girlfriend. I am trying to get the dog fixed up here.

My female went out of heat about 2 1/2 weeks ago (stoppped bleeding), they did mate, but I don't think they "tied"(at least not that I saw), but today, they did for sure. Do they still breed after the female is out of heat, just to do so? And if she's no longer in heat, can she still get pregnant?

Its really cold here and the wind his blowing, but this dog loves water. He is a brown lab. I just had a brainstorm. What do you think of me taking him to the river, tossing him a stick in the water and when he comes back out of the water, suds him up with dog shampoo then toss the stick back into the water so he will jump back in for a rinse?
The dog goes in the water anyways. He is not afraid of the cold. Right now he is lying on the floor beside me. in front ot the fire in my utility room. Do you think this idea of a bath would work? He still stinks.

I have fed my lab Purina Dog chow since the day I brought him home. My son says only feed him this kind of dog food or he will poop all over the garage while I am gone to work. My son was buying the dog food until he moved out about a week ago. I buy dog food in 50 lb bags 5 at a time. Its on sale now so I am thinking about getting a couple more bags.
My friend told me he gets his dog generic dog food and it works just as well and is cheaper. What is your take on dog food and should I just stick to the 50 lb bags of Purina Dog Chow?

My son moved 25 miles or so away to live with his sweetie pie and left a 80 lb full blooded brown lab behind, so I have hired someone to fence in my back yard. I asked for a 5 ft tall fence instead of a 4 foot tall fence thinking my dog could not climb over a 5 foot fence. The company is going to map my yard on Wednesday. My son says the dog will not climb a 4 ft fence much less a 5 ft fence. They are also going to put a wire along the bottom to prevent him from digging out. Any suggestions, comments or help would be appreciated. I am about to spend 2800 bucks.
