I put frontline on my dog, yet I have found 2 ticks on my dog. The first I removed easily with a dog tick remover. However, the second one on the head is the problem. The body came of, but the head is embedded. I put a little frontline on top of the area. My question is- I am a nurse, and now how to put in stitches, so should I lance the area, then remove the head of the tick, and suture it up, if needed-I do not think she'll need it sutured, but just in case, then put some antibiotic ointment on it or should I wait until the vets office is open tomorrow? She is showing no signs or symptoms of lyme disease.

Frontline Plus is a good product for tick prevention as it kills them on contact when the tick bites. I has to be applied every 2 weeks for ticks though not monthly (as for Fleas). The ticks still attach to the dog. If the tick is not easily removable and is embedded in the dog always see a vet ASAP Tick paralysis is a shocking death for a dog if not treated early with tick anti-venom. ( that is if it actually is a Paralysis tick. there are a few kinds some of which are harmless.) Symptoms of paralysis tick is usually showing within 30mins - 2 hours.
If unable to get to a vat ASAP cover the tick with Vaseline completely as this suffocates them and most of the time they drop off.
If you get frontline in the spray this can be used instead of the Vaseline. Dont panic about the frontline that might have got under your dogs skin as it is a non toxic drug and the worst it usually does is localized swelling.

Frontline won't cause more problems. I swear by the product. The only people I've had come in and claim that it doesn't work turn out to be applying it incorrectly. Are you using spray or spot-on? The spot-on needs to go directly on to the skin, part the fur and put it in a few different places to stop it flooding on to the fur. Spray can sometimes be underdosed, but if you put it directly on to a tick and the area just around it, the thing will fall off after a few hours.
Don't put stitches in the wound. As a nurse, you'll know that areas of infection (which is what happens when tick heads are left in) should be left open. Just keep the area completely clean and see the vet tomorrow.

If the tick had lyme disease, removing the head at this point wouldn't help anyway. The disease is already in the bloodstream. IF the tick had any disease at all. I say leave it alone. Picking and cutting at it is just going to exacerbate the problem and add stress to the dog from the incision. I pulled ticks off my dog all the time and they never did her any harm. Oh, and I also found that none of those fleas medications did anything for ticks. It doesn't keep the ticks off, and it definitely won't make the tick head come out. If you're concerned about Lyme Disease, you need to take your dog to the vet so it can be checked out properly.

We had to take our dog to the vet to find out if the dog had gotten Lymes disease we found at he had gotten it and needed to give him medicine. I would take your dog in to make sure he doesnt have this problem. The vet then used a long metal cylinder with sharp edges on it and dug deep into the dog and then with a long tweezers twisted and pulled it out. Anything the tick doesnt like will bury its head into the dog deeper and then there could be more of a problem later.

frontline won't get a tick head out. it actually might cause problems - frontline is not something you want *under* your dog's skin. you have to dig it out with a knife or something, then apply antibiotic ointment. poor pup. i hate ticks more than almost anything.
next time drown the tick with alcohol first so it will let go (and disinfect the area at the same time), then pull it out.

take your dog to the vet to get the head removed and to check for possible diseases as a result of the bites.
For future refrence, put nail polish on ticks, It makes there body unable to take in oxygen, so they pull their heads out of the dog, or human for that manner, to breath.
Most nail polish is non-toxic and will clean right up will a little soap and water from your dogs fur.

We had tick problems recently. We tried EVERYTHING. The thing that worked best in the end was Advantix. You have to get it from the vet, but we haven't had a single tick since. Good luck!

light a match and blow it out and then put it on the head, this should and normally will make the tick release itself, and that's when you can take out the tick. normally you use the match when the tick is completely intact. you just put it on the back end and the tick will release it's "teeth" and that's when you can pull it out

I wouldnt worry about it too much, ticks dont eat much. I'd boil your dog just to be safe though.
