yes get some alcohol( the one they use in the hospital) dab some on some cotton wool pull the dogs ears back gently and wipe firmly, if its ear mites a whole lot of muck will come out. Should make him feel much better until you get to the vets.

Neither! Get the cause of this itching diagnosed. And no, you can't see ear mites. Your vet can, using the correct instrument. If he's that bad, and itchy ears can be very irritating for a dog (plus if he shakes his head enough, he could develop a haematoma), I'd try to bring his vet visit forward, if you can. Unfortunately home remedies can do more harm than good.

If it's mites then you should be able to see them (tiny, tiny black dots around the ear opening) - if you can see some then try, very gently, wiping with just cotton wool and water to get them off. If the ears smell then it's an infection. I know it's horrible when your dog's in distress but try not to worry too much today as your vet will sort the problem out tomorrow.

My dog has floppy ears. If the inside of her ear gets wet, the moisture can't get out and can get infected inside. She will itch either way. After a bath or when she gets her ear wet, I take a capful of rubbing alcohol and put in each ear and rub it for a few seconds. I will do the same thing the next day to make sure all the water is out. If all else fails, take the dog to the vet.
I know some people don't like my answer, but it comes straight from my vet and it works. Plus it prevents the ear infection in the first place.

I wouldn't use alcohol - if there's any kind of cut or scrape in the ears that will really hurt. And it will also dry out the delicate skin and possibly cause more irritation.
My dog gets a lot of ear infections, and I usually just take a tissue, wrap it around my finger, and clean out what I can from his ears. You can also use Q-tips, but you don't ever want to go deeper than you can see, because you may damage his inner ear. There are also commercial ear cleaning formulas available at any petstore.
Definitely get him to a vet though - they're the only ones who can fix it!

Do not put anything into your dogs ears. If you try to clean them before you get the dog to the vets it will make it very hard for the vet to take a sample of whats going on in the dogs ears to analize. Leave then alone until you get to your vets.

I don't think you should put anything in your dogs ears that the vet has not prescribed you could end up doing more damage and really hurting your dog which I am sure that you don;t want to do.
I think your best bet is to take him to the vet tomorrow and see what he says....

You can try putting a 100% cotton t-shirt on him. Sounds weird I know. But its worth a try. I've never tried it with a dog with a possible ear infection, but I can tell you it worked great with a dog of mine that had allergiers, and would chew his feet until they bled. And no the shirt didn't cover his feet.
Good luck at the vet tomorrow.
*Edit* Please don't pour anything into your dog's ears unless under the supervision of your vet. You could cause damage to his ears, make it harder for your vet to diagnose the problem, or even make the problem worse.
