My female went out of heat about 2 1/2 weeks ago (stoppped bleeding), they did mate, but I don't think they "tied"(at least not that I saw), but today, they did for sure. Do they still breed after the female is out of heat, just to do so? And if she's no longer in heat, can she still get pregnant?

Out of nowhere she started bleeding about 3 weeks ago. She swole up down there and that lasted about two weeks. Then everything stoppped. They mated a lot, but I don't think they tied, b/c our smaller dog would interupt them, or they got distracted. Once she stopped bleeding, they stopped mating. Until yesterday, they mated and tied.

And yes, she willingly mated and was okay with all of the matings, the male didn't force her.

You sure that she is out of heat ? When they are ready to breed, the blood goes fairly clear and is much harder to see than when she is first in heat... It's possible if they did tie ( and most females won't after they are out of heat ) that she is just ' running clear ' and is actually now ready to breed?!

But the answer is, Yes female dogs can only get pregnant when they are in heat.

Just because your dog stop bleeding doesn't mean she's no longer in heat.

A dog's heat cycle lasts 3-4 weeks. Generally bleeding only last for the first 7-9 days of the cycle, although some dogs bleed longer, and sometimes for the entire cycle.

If you are worried about her being pregnant have her spayed. This will terminate the pregnancy and prevent future ones. It also carries more health benefits, no chance of uterine cancer or pyometra, an infection that can be deadly if not treated promptly, and lessened chances of mammary cancer.

And before someone OMG killing unborn puppies is murder you're evil. Keep in mind that several hundred puppies are born everyday. And several hundred are put to sleep every day. By these puppies not being born, you are saving them from that, and you are saving the lives of puppies already here.

A female is only fertile during her heat. Did her season go for 3weeks? Some females can have silent heats and Split heats. If this is an unplanned mating take her to the vet and they will be able to give you medication to terminate it. But I'm guessing since they weren't separated while you thought she was in season that this is what you want anyway. Dogs can fall pregnant from slip matings too.

Just because the discharge has stopped or at least enough to not be noticed does not mean she is out of heat. A dog will only get pregnant during ovulation and this only happens during the heat cycle.

If the female allowed the male to mate with her and they tied then in all likelihood she will get pregnant.

You Must have not calculated her heat right. No Female will allow a male to mount and mate unless she is in heat.

Absolutely only when in heat...But let me tell you have to keep the dogs seperated by fence and metal...I had a lab eat thru a wooden door to get to my other lab...it was okay that they bred but I wanted my female to be about six months older

Yes that is true but it sounds like she was still in heat when they mated. Happy Puppies!

yes, there is a such thing as animal "rape." This is most likely what you saw. And no, you won't have to worry about pregnancy, although I would check with your vet just in case
