I understand about 'it depends on how you raise the pet' but I just mainly want to know if it would make a good pet for a family of a toddler (2 and a half) and a 15 yr old, I'm thinking of getting one for th family.

we have a three year old, a 15 yr old and twin 17yr olds and a baby on the way and we also have a japanese akita *****.
We were advised to get her as a puppy to ensure her temprement and so we have. She is absoloutely great with the kids, more so with our 3 year old than any of them. Our dog (kita) plays with our daughter she even bugs our daughter to play with her and they fall asleep on each other and i trust her cmpletely with my lil girl. In ancient times the japs would leave the akita with their children as they are such good dogs with their pack.
serious downfall is that they are not good with strangers. If my daughters friends come to play we put kita in the garden as visiting children are not part of the pack and the dog sees no obligation to them and could easily turn.
its a responsibility but well worth it if you ask me!!!

dont punish the breed punish the deed,,, they are beautiful loyal dogs and if trained right make the best pets i know!!! i wouldnt have any other breed

1. Before you buy ANY breed of dog, take the time to learn about its characteristics, requirements, etc. to make sure it fits with your life situation.

2. Only buy from a reputable, established breeder, and be prepared to pay the cost. Every breed has a breed club, and they have a list of breeders they can recommend. For Akitas, it's the Akita Club of America (www.akitaclub.org). Pet quality dogs from the better Akita kennels generally run about $700-800. Or contact a local akita rescue. They will evaluate the dog, and are very careful to match dog with family, have knowledgable people who can evaluate the dog, offer guidance, etc. Adoption fees are usually in the $250-300 range. There are a couple of email addresses at the bottom, contact one, tell them what you want and where you're located, your family situation, and it will get passed on to the one nearest you.

3. Avoid back yard breeders like the plague. They may not charge much, but you have no idea what you're getting.

4. Evaluate the dog for temperament - there are unstable individuals in every breed, goldens and labs included. It's especially important with any large, powerful breed. If you're not sure how to do this, consult a local dog trainer, or kennel club for advice. Or refer back to No. 2.

5. Learn how to interact with dogs, and teach your children. This is especially important with very young children and big dogs.

6. All that being said, Akitas make great family dogs if properly chosen, raised, trained and socialized. They've very protective and loyal, but can also be dominant. So it becomes very important to learn how to be the pack leader.

Choosing to aquire an Akita companion is more about family knowledge, responsibility and aquiring your companion through a reputable source. Be it rescue or a breeder that breeds for temperment, does prelim certs and screens homes to know an Akita is a good choice for your family.

An Akita in a responsible, knowledgeable family is a wonderful breed as a companion.
2 yr olds should not be left unsupervised with ANY breed, and that includes a Lab. The simple fact is Labs do not fit every familys lifestyle nor do Akitas. Please do some research on the ACA website as well as visiting Safekids.com.
Possibly join the Akita network or Akita adopters to make an informed decision. The Akita definately makes a wonderful family companion for the "right" family One breed does not fit all families.
Sincerely Laura

Akitas tend to have an erratic streak. Not all of the blood lines are certain to be family friendly. I would be more inclined towards a Labrador Retriever, of any color, for a family pet with toddlers.

I wouldn't recommend it.

Look at a lab or golden retriever... if you are wanting a large dog. A Welsh Corgi is another great choice too.
