Quicking nails does happen. I have been a groomer for 11 years and it happens if the dog moves at the wrong time. You can use a styptic powder such as Qwik-Stop to stop the nail bleeding. Your dog can't bleed to death from a cut quick, that's a myth. However if you don't clot it properly they can pick up an infection. Around the house you can use flour, baby powder or ground black pepper (both a styptic and an antiseptic) to stop the bleeding. As for your carpet, peroxide will dissolve the stain.

Yeah you know what it happens... You can be as careful as you want, and you sometimes grab that quick... I feel like a jerk when I do it, but they don't seem to hold a grudge at all..
There are little sulphur sticks you can get when you quick them like that.. Stops the bleeding right away.
Some people even put cornstarch on the tip and it stops up the bleeding.
Anyhow, Oxyclean works really well on blood stains. but use it with cold water. Hot or warm water sets the stain harder into the carpet and makes it harder to get out.
Edit: If the worst thing you do, is to accidently cut your dog's nail too short, then you have nothing to worry about .. Everyone does it, groomers do it, the vet assistant does it... If people are bent out of shape cause you clipped a nail too short, then they aren't doing their own dog's nails!

First things first: call your vet and make sure your dog will be okay. Broken nails are a good means for infections to begin - which is also true for people, for that matter. Your vet may prescribe an antibiotic wipe, shot, or pills to ensure your dog will continue to be healthy.
Then, any of the carpet cleaners suggested above should work. Just read the labels carefully, since some may state that special preparations are necessary when attempting to remove blood.
Good luck!

No, he didn't hurt his dog that much. Dogs have skin on the part of the nail, closest to the paw. If you clip it, it'll bleed. Think of it as a dog hangnail.
Now for the carpet, try some Spray Nine.

I would be more concerned with trimming my dog's nails too short than blood on the carpet.
Take your dog to a groomer.
To Tyler S: "That much"? No groomer I have ever taken my dog to has drawn blood.
