yea that should be high enough.. labs arnt really good jumpers.. also, getting him fixed will help keep him in the yard, as he wont want to roam. thats so great that you have decided to keep him!!! you are doing the dog a good thing.. One more thing, labs are very smart dogs, they are easy to train but have energy, so you want to make sure to walk to the dog and train him.. you will be better when he is trained, and the walks will allow him to get his energy out..

I'm in the process of getting a full-blooded chocolate lab pup. The owners of the pups said there dogs won't jump a five foot fence, so that shouldn't be a problem. However, since 2800 bucks is quite expensive, I have an alternative suggestion for you. I would suggest an underground fence. I know a dog owner who got one of those and absolutely loves it! You can get one that will cover 500 square feet for a couple hundred dollars if you put it in yourself. If you get in professionally installed, it will only cost you between six hundred and eight hundred dollars! That way, you won't have to worry about a big fence around your property and the wire at the bottom. The fences are usually harmless, you just have to keep a close eye on what methods the fence uses to keep the dog within the confines (some use a mild electrical shock which won't hurt a big dog like a lab, some use a high pitch sound only the dogs can hear if they cross it -this helps them learn that they cannot go any farther than that boundary line).
Hope that helps! Best of luck with your pup!

5 foot would be okay.. But if he really wanted to go, he could.. I would go 6' if possible, or I would get a run that would keep him safe when he goes out.. Then you can get 6 ' and it wouldn't cost as much as fencing the entire yard...Could get say 6 ' high by 15' x 15' Plus then if you find that 6 foot doesn't do it ( and some dogs can do 6 ' easily ) you could have fence put over the top to make sure that he can't get out..
Depending on the price difference. I suspect tho that 6' fence is probably a fair bit more money than 5 foot.

If your dog really wanted to get out of a 5 foot fence, it probably could. Some dogs are just natural escape artists. If your dog is neutered and hasn't shown any signs of scaling fences in the past, a 5 foot fence would probably be okay. I wouldn't want anything shorter though. You might ask how much more a 6 foot fence would be. Fences are expensive, but a good fence will last many years and be worth the money.

I have a 5ft fence, and one of my dogs is able to jump the fence, but none of them bother trying. Generally, if you avoid leaving the dog out there for long periods, and he's neutered, a 5 ft fence should be good enough. If you want to leave him out, you should have a higher fence, or a lean back on the top of the fence so he can't get out.
I prefer 5 to 4 since people can reach over a 4 ft fence easier, and two of my dogs can put their paws on the top of a 4 ft fence.

Well unless your big boy never jumps a fence the maybe 5 foot is fine but I'd go another foot to 6 foot fencing. Lab can jump a 5 foot fence if they have a mind too.

I think a 4 ft fence would be sufficient. Is he a jumper? If you want extra security, 5 ft would be your very best bet. My yellow lab's not a jumper and the 3 ft fence is more than sufficient.

Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise and attention. Trust me, if he gets bored or lonely, you bet he'll go over that fence.
My 100lb lab can jump a 6 foot fence quite easily.

sure - a three.5 ft fence for a bigger canines isn't super sufficient. this is extremely achievable he won't hop over, yet from my important adventure, if there is a few thing on the different factor, like different canines (in step with risk in season), he gets out.
