Instead of Vaseline (petroleum based) use KY Jelly (water soluble). It isn't harmful to your pet and it has a sweet taste that will induce salivation (also helping to re-sheath your pup).

Like any adolescent male, erections are common and unpredictable. While a dog doesn't have a humanesque erection, they can sheath and unsheath their penis at will and unconsciously as well. If the penis is dry then re-sheathing can become a problem. If there is an infection, then the penis can stay unsheathed for quite some time to allow the dog to clean himself and help heal.

Many times this problem, especially in a young pup, will solve itself as long as the glans isn't protruding and swollen (this is the knob close to the base of the penis that swells during copulation and locks the male and female together). Also note the color, is it bright red or fleshy pink? A bright red unsheathed penis can be signs of infection (fungal or bacterial).

Unfortunately most of the ways to help him is going to include some hands on time for you. Just remember that it is as sensitive as a humans (even more so I would guess) so use a gentle touch with warmed hands any time you need to touch him. It may sound gross or sick, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do as a pet owner.

Is it still out now?? Sorry.. I am giggling when trying to answer.. :) But what made his weiner come out??

Anyhow.. Put some vaseline on his ' weiner ' and pull the skin back down over it. Check it today to make sure that it isn't irritated or bothering him.. If it happens again, I would take him in. But odds are once you get the skin pulled back over his wiener, he'll be fine. If it keeps happening, you might want to have the vet look to see why this is a problem. You really don't want his poor little wiener to dry out and get stuck out.

Thanks! I am a she.. I have no wiener myself .. But it seems to work :)

I wanted to add to Rob_N_Liz's answer.. Yeah KY Jelly is likely better, but make sure that you don't use a KY Jelly that contains a spermicide or other agent..

Sounds like excitement ; not sexual arousal. The old trick is to put a bit of sugar on the end and it should shrink back. Try to keep him calm; a swollen "weiner" can be painful. If the sugar doesn't work in about 30 minutes, call the vet. Some smaller dogs do have sheath problems.

This isn't as odd as it sounds.

Sometimes a hair can get stuck around the penis preventing it from going back into the sheath. The fact that his penis is now dry, isn't going to help it go back intot he sheath either.

Check him over, make sure there are no hairs or anything else wrapped around his penis. If there is CAREFULLY remove them. Use some petroleaum jelly to lubricate the penis and help it back into the sheath.

If you are at all uncomfortable doing this, then yes please have him seen by the vet today.

This has happened to my dog many times. A vet isn't necessary unless you just can't do it yourself. It's kind of gross to do, but if you can get him to roll over on his back, you need to pull back the skin to open the area a bit and see if that helps him pull it back in. If not, you need to gently slide it back in by starting at the base and gently pushing downward. It should go in as you work your way up.

Kinda gross, but that's how we do it. Just make sure you wash your hands before (and after of course)

Yes this a is gentetic problem one of my dogs had and it is very painful to the dog and if it is not correct he can run the risk of losing it. Most of the time I think they soak it in glucose and if there is a further problem they will put a little slice in the sheath and make the opening bigger so there wont be a problem for him.

Don't people know today is Sunday????This may or may not have happen..more than likely no it didn't ..If this was the case your dog would have been in serious trouble this morning. Being a breeder this is what you have to worry about sometimes and it is very serious when it does happen. So maybe I really think you are stretching things here a little bit.

With all these thumbs down does this mean best answer is totaly out of the running ????

It sounds gross, but maybe he needs to put it in something before it'll go away.
Seriously - maybe he just needs to fulfill the whole sex thing for it to go away. If he's fixed, it shouldn't be a problem.
However, I'm NOT a dog owner and there'll surely be someone in here giving you better advice that me on that count, but that's my instinct.
Does he look in pain? Is he aware of it?
