About a week ago I got a 4 month old yellow lab, he sleeps alot and is not vey active. His appetite is good, he does not have worms and he is using the bathroom pretty good. I am concerned also because everyone tells me he is too small for his age he weighs 15 lb now.

We had to put down our Aussie Shep/Heeler mix in December, age and cancer. He was an outside dog and we are looking for another great out door dog. We have 2 kids, ages 3 and 17 months and about 8 outside cats. I like German Shepperds and Mastiffs. We had a Sheperd and he was shot in the leg by a neighbors kid and had problems with his spine, he had to be put down. We also had a Mastiff, he just showed up one day in our yard(I think it was a Mastiff, mix maybe, he looked like Marmeduke but wasn't a Great Dane). A few weeks later we found him under our porch. So now we are looking for another dog, the neighbors kid is no longer a problem. We are looking at the pound, but wonder what other breeds we could look at that have some of the same characteristic of the dogs we have already been looking for. As you can probrably tell, we aren't into small dogs.

[I still can't edit. I have no idea why]

I KNOW about how many puppies a dog will have, as I HAVE been in the whole process before, but in Korea!

What I was asking was how many puppies I will get and how many I would give to the male dog owner!

As for the "ethical" question, I think it's more unethical to breed dogs just to get a "better breed". Dogs are for loving, friendly pets, not for showing off. I've had mutts, chihuahuas, shih tzus, poodles, jindos, and more, and no matter how soft their fur may be or how cute they may look, they are all the same in that they are loving, faithful pets and friends.

I personally love the Maltese breed and know a lot of people who cannot afford them because of the high price. I want to help those people. I reallly don't understand why everyone is so fussed over registering and pure breeds- a little mix here and there will NOT alter the behavior drastically. (Mutts make great pets and are healtheir, btw.)

Thanks for your time.

I need some suggestions on how to train my puppy to pee on newspaper, or suggestions on something else to use.

Here’s my story: We used to keep her closed in her crate with blankets while we were gone, but she would pee on those (she couldn't hold it long enough, she's only 4 months old). It was really hard constantly washing blankets and towels that were soaked in pee every day, our bills were getting outrageous from the amount of laundry we had to do.

We recently moved her crate to the kitchen and put her bed inside of it and leave the door of the crate open (the kitchen is gated off) so that she can go in and out of her crate to play/move around a bit. She has started to pee on the tile, outside the crate instead. I put newspaper down a few times, but came home to find it shredded all over the place every day, so I stopped that. That mess was even worse!

I know that she understands not to pee in her crate, and she won't if she can help it (like I said, she just couldn't hold it long enough, so she would have to pee in her crate…when we are home, she is perfect at letting us know when she has to go potty and doesn’t have accidents.) But, she doesn’t seem to understand that the newspaper is for going potty on, not destroying. If I use towels, I am back to my original problem with all the laundry. I don’t mind having to mop up the pee from the tile, but she pees in front of our dishwasher, and it leaks under and I can’t clean under there, and our house is older, so there are lots of little cracks everywhere for the pee to soak into…yuck!

We have her trained to go potty outside when we are home, now how can I train her that the newspaper is to go potty on when we are not home (is that even possible? Double housebreaking?)

Or, what have you guys found to be useful? I know they sell those puppy pads, but I also don’t want to have to spend outrageous amounts on something for her to pee on, if I don’t have to. It seems like there has to be another solution out there!

Help!

I should add, we don’t leave her water or food dish out all day either. She gets fed in the morning before we leave to work, then taken to go potty before we leave.

Thanks!

My (very small) one year old dog is lovely in very way but recently he's started to get very nervous of all other dogs he meets. He's had one agressive dog come up to him some time ago but general meets very freindly animals. I think the more boisterous puppies which are often bigger than him are the ones who have scared him even though they are just being playful.

Otherwise he's very confident and great with new people and dogs he already knows. How can I reassure him when we're out and meet other dogs?

will it be safe to bring another pup in after its had all its shoots and i have bleached everythign and cleaned anywhere a dog can go. i am not sayin i will listen to what ya'll say beucase i ahve already discussed this with the vet and they think it wil be fine after its had all shots and the dog will never go outside so it will be house trained 100% and only see outside when its in my arms. it will never touch the ground

I think I should train my yorkie pup to ring a bell. She is 7 months old and 3.9 lbs. I hear this is common. I think this will help my dog because if she is running around the house, she will not tell me that she has to go and will go in the house. This is why she is mainly crate trained. Otherwise, she is doing very well with training and responds when I tell her to "go potty". how can I train her to ring a bell??
Any other alerting methods that worked for you??

I would first like to thank everyone who answered my earlier question. I tried to add details, but somehow it won't let me.

My dog is not registered (we got her as a gift from a far friend), but a purebred Maltese. I have no intention of spaying her, for even if I were to end up with ten puppies and can't find homes for them, I can take care of them all.

By "couldn't care less about the mother and father", I mean as in I do not need to know who the parents of the MALTESE male was. I have no intention of having her bred with another breed of dogs. Oh no.

By that I meant I have no intention of sending her or the pups to shows or anything like that. I love them as smart, intelligent pets.

What I meant was, if I were to find someone who has a Maltese male as a PET and PET ONLY, how many puppies will get.

I know that those who left the spaying comments were doing so for a noble reason, but I really do not wish to do so.

Thank you, and much answers desired!

I'm not sure if its a problem. I read that chihuahuas love to please and that to not pay attention to them is like death for them. Imagine my shock. I'm not exactly a get up and go person who can pay attention to my 3m old puppy constantly. :( I get down on the floor and play with her some, she sleeps with me every night, and she cries if I leave the room without her, but she doesn't listen to a thing I say. She doesn't come when called even though she knows her name and understands what I want. Unless she wants me, she ignores me and does what she wants to do. It isn't because she's stupid. She's very smart. She fetches (when she feels like it), she understands sit, dance, and she will jump through a hoop for a treat. But otherwise, unless I have something she wants or she wants my attention right then, she ignores me / runs amuck / does her own thing. Is this normal? Does my puppy not like me? Or is it merely something that will go on until she's older or gets training?

There's this person I know who's Dog was hit by a car and survived. She had just gotten it from a dog rescue 2wks prior. Her boyfriend was out with the dog and her friends dog and the boyfriend saw the car and yelled for the dog to "come" he didn't listen but the other dog did and then their dog was hit.The owner of this dog told me that the cops were called and there was some damage done to the person who hit the dog's car and she also said that the cops had called her and said there won't be any charges laid, but did ask her if there were any witnesses. The reason for me seeking advice about this is because this girl is a Bull$hitter and I don't believe her when she say's that this is all over with. Now...this is my question, 'Who is responsible for this and what is going to happen?'

I used to have a Shih Tzu back in Korea, and I gave him to this man who had a girl Shih Tzu. They breeded and the man gave me one puppy.

Now I have a female Maltese. I couldn't care less about knowing the other dog's mother or father (I don't know my dog's) and whatnot, but if I were to breed her (in a year or something) with a male dog, about how many puppies would I get?

Should I just give the male dog one puppy like I got last time, or is it different in the U.S.? Is it half and half? Please help me.

Thanks!

I have a lab mix, who has never been around toddlers or young children.
I have friend who've brought their 3 and 5 yr old and "Bear's" behavior was like he was scared of them. He didn't do them any harm, he just ran in circles and if the child made a swift movement he would bound away. I just want to make sure I do all I can to eliminate the possiblility of him hurting anyone.
Any training suggestions?
I have decided to put him on a lead when he is around younger children.

My dog had these cute little pups yesterday. She has more pups then places to feed them. I was told by a few people to help out by hand feeding them, the feed store suggested "Just Born" at $50 a can.

I heard goats milk also works for this purpose and I'm going to guess that it is also cheaper. I'm not trying to be a stingy here, if I was I'd just say feed them yourself! If I had fifty dollars I would have already gotten the "Just Born". I saved to get what I needed for the birth but didn't think I would have this many.

Should I use the goats milk? And where can I find it? aside from in a goat... Does anyone know how much it cost?

ok this isnt really a question but i just had to tell everyone about the "clicker" i just started clicker training my 6 month old maltese and the clicker could have saved her life. I live in a condo and unfortunetly my place is close to the road. the door got opened a crack and she rushed out and was to close to the road for comfort. i was so worried. i clicked the "clicker" which means TREAT TIME and she came running back to me! any other time she would have kept running like it was a game. SO THANK YOU CLICKER, IT MIGHT JUST HAVE SAVED MY DOGS LIFE! : )
