For a male, as soon as their testies descend. For females, before their first heat.
female dog spayed before her first heat will have a near zero chance of developing mammary cancer. After the first heat, this incidence climbs to 7% and after the second heat the risk is 25% (one in four!). It is easy to see that an early spay can completely prevent what is frequently a very difficult and potentially fatal form of cancer.

But is it too late if a dog is already past her second heat? No, in fact spaying is important even in female dogs who already have obvious tumors. This is because many mammary tumors are stimulated by estrogens; removing the ovaries, the source of estrogens, will help retard tumor spread.

It depends on the breed and size of your dog. Check with your vet. I have a medium sized dog (32lbs.) and I had her spayed at about 6 months of age. The vet told me to do it between 6-8 mo. so I did it right away before she ever went into heat.

It usually depends on the vet and the dog. I have a female jack russell and she was fixed when she was 4 months old....she did just fine.

about 5-6months old. try to hold out til 6mnths old. it won't be so hard on the dog, the vet will be able to find female parts easier as the animal gets older as well.
if your dog is a female, wait til she out of "heat" if shes already started. other wise it's a big bloody mess! quite dangerous for your dog.
good luck!!

For female: No earlier than 6 months.

For male: As soon as the testicles drop...But, I am not sure how old that is...I have heard 8 weeks...and some breeders will neuter them before they are found a new home...

THE EARLIER THE BETTER
At least 12 weeks old.

The sooner, the less likely they will run off as much or pee to mark things. If they start those habits its tough to stop.
