I love all large breeds. However if you want the Apollo of dogs then it's an easy answer. Magnificent to look at and great with kids. I have two kids and two great Danes and they are fantastic with them. I recommend a "European" style( otherwise known as "old" style). They are a little more stout with a bigger boxier head. Victory Danes in Georgia has some of the best looking Danes I have ever seen. As others have mentioned there are some health concerns but if you get a good quality dog from a great breeder then you should have minimum issues. Look into something called "bloat" ( when their stomach twist ) there are ways to help minimize the risks of your Dane getting it. Enjoy your new pup whatever you decide.

You have alot of choices when you're looking for a large breed that is good with kids, but tell me, do you have preferences when it comes to upkeep? Some large breeds like Standard Poodles require frequent grooming. But they're great with kids, and they don't shed either. Great Dane's are so mellow and calm around people and kids and they are so large they look like they should wear a saddle blanket and sleep in a stall....I have a Golden Retriever and she is magically good with kids. Naturally submissive to everyone and anything. A small child could grab an ear or a tail (not that that's a good thing, but it happens) and my Golden would let it fly without a reaction. Goldens are as a breed, very loving and very playful. They need to be walked and they love to swim and they mesh into the family very easily- great personalities. Just give them alot of stuffed animals and some dog cookies and you've got a good dog....Mastiffs are really cute pups but they drool and I hate drool :)
Good luck! I am sure whatever you choose you'll love.

Hello,
thought that I may help shed some light on your question...I would look into the Boxer. They have a great tempmt. wonderful with children. The important thing however is to properly socialize the dog, weather or not it's a boxer, a dane or other breed...The dog needs proper training, and needs to understand that you are the Alfa...(the boss) once this is done, almost any dog will be a pleasure...Do keep in mind that well, you did have a mastiff.....Im sure you know the pros and cons...But again look into the boxer...Im confident that breed will do the trick for you...In any case good luck....and do lots and lots of research....Especially on their temperament...(for the sake of the kids..)

A good family friendly that are medium to large are Black Labs and Rotts.
Danes are a little slow sometime and require LOTS of training and supervision around little ones, they dont mean to hurt them, but just a happy tail wagging hitting a kid (or an adult) HURTS.
Check out Purina.com, they have a cool test you can take that matches your personality with what you are looking for ina dog and can give you some great options or maybe introduce some breeds you didnt think of.
Good luck!

Great danes are great with kids, but unfortunately, they have very short life spans, so if you have a problem losing it to old age in a short time, maybe not. German shepherds, golden retrievers and labs are great with kids. St. Bernards and Newfoundlands are really good with kids, but if the kid is too small, might get knocked down a bit. On the upside, if the kid falls into the pool, the Newfoundland will save her. Of course, if she's just swimming in a pool, the Newfoundland will still save her, which can get old, but its very amusing.

Do your research on any of them and remember... Large breeds do not live as long as smaller dogs. They can also suffer from al lot more ailments as well.
I would suggest you go to a few dog shows and talk to some breeders. That is what I did before I brought home my two Bloodhounds and it made a world of difference.
The best dog owners are educated dog owners...

I own a German Rottweiler and he is great with kids. He was easily trained and knows not to be rough with kids or smaller animals. If there is a child around him he will sit down away from the child and let them come to him. They can pull, push, sit and do just about anything to him and he lets them. I have a 1 year nephew and my rott will follow about 3 feet behind him everywhere and not let my other dogs get near him. They are great family dogs and smart.

I too am looking for a big dog. I was seriously looking at tosa inus. just need to know if they will be accepted in my neighborhood and state. (homeowners association is a pain some time) they are illegal in some states I hear. whatever.
the only downside to this is I would have to adopt it from overseas. UNLESS there are some legit pure breeders out there in the states.
I have read the history of this dog, along with some updated information. they seem to be very patient, quiet, LOYAL, brave, high tolerance for pain(just in case your girlfriend's daugther pulls his tail), etc.
just a thought, dude!

The Great Pyrenees are great with children, and known as 'nanny dogs' . However, they are excessive shedders, and need a yard...Otherwise, I would recommend a Great Dane. Choose a mellow puppy, and be consistant with socializing him around children.
I am betting that you can find the perfect big dog here> http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?action=1&pet.Animal=Dog&pet.Breed=great+dane&pet.Age=&pet.Size=&pet.Sex=&location=97415&preview=1&scope=0&x=13&y=12
Just put in your own zip code, and click on any dog's pic, to learn more about each dog, such as how they are with kids..
