Wow! What an opportunity to study overseas:) Good Luck and have fun. As for you pup - I can only speak from personal experience. I have had family members that have traveled/been away for months at a time (3 months at the most) and my dog has remembered them each time when they return. He actually is super excited to see them when they get home and tends to follow them around and stick by their side for a while when they return.
I know it's tough to leave your "furry child" but just remember that he will be with your family who will take good care of him until you return (maybe your family will even let you "talk" to your pup by phone:) .
Good Luck

Puppies most important imprinting time is between 7 and 12 weeks old. A dog will never forget someone (or thing) that it lived with during these times. So as long as you had her somewhere in that age range, she won't forget you. Not to say she'll remember everything, but she'll recognize your scent and that you are family.

I watched an episode of The Dog Whisperer where Cesar Millan took in several abandoned dogs after Hurricane Katrina. The dogs spent 6 months or more with Cesar while they searched for their owners. When they finally were able to reunite one dog with its owners the dog went nuts when he saw them, proving that he still remembered them even after an extended amount of time.

My mom's dog remembers me and I only visit once a year or more.

As a dog owner/breeder, I would say probably no. I base that on the fact that a puppy doesn't remember their own mother after being apart that long. Sorry, but you will return and get to know each other again.

Yes the puppy will remember you. I got a puppy for my dad when one of our older dogs passed away. I was only around the pup for about three weeks before I left for basic training. I was gone for about seven months before coming home. As soon as I walked into the house she comes running and jumps up on me licking and wagging her tail. She doesn't do that to people she didn't know. Now that she's older, when I come home to visit she always remembers me.

I believe that your puppy will absolutely remember you! Once you return, and are around your dog for a few hours to a couple of days, you should easily become #1 in that puppy's life again-after six months of being with you, I don't believe that pup will ever forget you. (It's your scent) ;-)

Yes, the dog will remember you. You have a scent that only the dog can detect, and once you are around again, it will remember. One thing, that you can do to insure that the dog won't miss you too bad is leave something behind that has your scent, that they can play with.

I dont believe she will remember you but if you show her lots of love and attention before you leave and whomever is keeping her for you does the same it shouldnt take any time at all for her to love you as she does now.All pets want is a security and feeling of love from their owners/family and if she gets this she will be loving and happy around any one that gives off that sort of spark. My son has gone to school so he is gone for most of the year and when he comes home the dogs all bark at him and take a few steps back but when he talks to them in that fun loving way that they are used to hearing from us they repond to him as if he has always been home.

I doubt it, but it would definitely depend on the dog.

THere's a breed called Jindo, and they NEVER forget about the owner they had as they were puppies. There are great stories of Jindo dogs that had like seven different owners but somehow found their way to their very first.

There are dogs with pretty bad memory. I doubt that my dog remembers her previous owner. :)

I believe she will. She might take a little while to get reacquainted with you when you return, but she will probably remember you. Talk to her on the phone when you can. I know it sounds silly, but when my dog hears my voice on the phone, she gets visibly excited and starts looking around for me. It will do a little to help keep that bond going.
