We are moving to our new home in one month and we both work so Ben will be alone for a few hours a day in between the time I leave for work and my husband gets home. We want to make sure he is comfortable and not scared and lonely. What can we do to help him adjust? thanks for any help anyone can give us.

I have heard conflicting stories about whether it is safe to feed a large breed puppy a high-protein diet (e.g., 30%+). Specifically, we will be getting a Kuvasz puppy in a few weeks. The males get up to around 115 pounds (not giant, but certainly large). Some people have told me you definitely need to feed a large breed puppy a high protein diet. Others have told me feeding a high protein diet is bad for the long-term health of a dog, particularly as it can promote developmental bone problems later in life. What I cannot find, however, is any scientific research on this. So... which is it?

I was thinking about getting one, so I decided to do some research on them online today while at work. I couldn't believe how expensive they are! Prices ranging from $500-2000?? Some that I found were not even being sold from a pure breeder and they were this price! Why is this?

My friend (she's a nice person and all but god forbid if she has a pet) has a dog that she doesnt take care of at all!!! She doesnt know old it is, and what kind of breed it is! She has never taken it to the vet, poor thing. It hasnt had it's necessary shots for 3 yrs. like rabies and worms. She doesnt even brush it! She has never ever taken it for a walk (and she has had her for 3 yrs.!) she never brushes the dogs teeth, and when she washes her dog all she does is spray it with a hose! and the dog doesnt like it cause sometimes she sprays it in her eyes! She feeds the dog only human food! And the dog isnt even registered. My mom wont let me report her to the animal control what can I do???

My dog has been shedding a lot for the past few weeks. I assume it is just because of the seasons changing. No this is not a life or death question but more of a curious question. And does anyone have any shedding remedies? I use the firminator brush and shed-X which is put into his food.

We are thinking about getting a male chihuahua, he is about a little over a year. (Not yet 1 and a half). He isn't neutered yet, and it's a big thing to me (especially when I have a spayed female dog..) Would the dog have any problems? I just want to make sure, to see if this dog would be a right addition to our family.

My friend's dog chewed on a real rat...and it seems like she chewed off the ear because my friend checked the garbage and the ear seemed to be missing. Does my friend need to clean the dig's mouth? or anything?

What is your opinion on fostering animals?

When I figure out what I'm doing as with college and living situations (the school I'm looking into I would be going 3 days a week and working a little other days); I was looking into fostering. I still live with my mom but I have the basement as my little 'apartment'. It's cozy. My mom is okay with us fostering (as long as they pay for vet/food), but I was just wondering your thoughts on this?

Have you ever done it/do it now? What's it like? What animals have you fostered? What age would you suggest we foster? ( I have a 6 year old male neutered Pekingnese, and a 12 week old female Dachshund not spayed yet, but absolutely will be).

I was thinking dogs over the age of 6/7 years old. I love old dogs, and I know that they always get adopted out last. Would that be okay? Or do you think I would be fostering them alot longer than I would with a kitten/puppy. (not that that matters, I wouldnt mind)

Sorry for all the Q's!

My boyfriend's dog, who is about 13 I believe, has recently began a strange habit it did not previous have. The dog is a dalmation and it has started to scratch the floors for long periods of time and for seemingly no reason, not at a close door or anything.. My question is why this might be happening or anyone elses experience with such behavior? Thank you

Hello,

Well, my husband and I are in the process of buying a house and will soon close. A few months down the line we are looking to get a dog. I had a wonderful German Shepherd as a child and teenager and he grew up with great Aussies. Both of us have expressed interest in both breeds, and both would be happy making the other happy. What I would like to know is which breed would be more suited with our home?

The house we are getting is smaller, but the dog would have free run both inside and out. Regretfully the back yard (fully fenced) is smaller as well, only at approx 1500 - 2000sqft.

I am a stay at home wife due to health issues and my husband is gone from morning until approx. 6:30pm. I would have no problem spending an hour or two a day playing fetch and working with the dog, but I do not see more than walks happening twice on the weekend. Is this too little for an Australian Shepherd? I have heard mixed things.

Which would fit our lifestyle better?

I have a 5 lb. Chihuahua who I have used a harness for for probably the last year or so. I left the harness on at all times because he made it so hard to get on him, that he would sometimes not make it outside to go potty and instead go on me while I was putting on the harness. I started noticing that his fur beneath the harness was damaged so I went back to using a collar... but the collar only chokes him. It seems neither method works well for me. I know his trachea is very delicate and I don't want to injure him by using a collar. But I also don't want him to be uncomfortable in his harness. What should I do? Can you buy softer harnesses that don't damage the fur and are more comfortable? If so, where?
